Hello everyone, I am considering upgrading my IKEA Besta cabinet with illuminated shelves to create a harmonious and modern room atmosphere. Since the Besta system is very flexible, I prefer not just to stick LED strips on the back panel but to choose an integrated solution that hides the cables and is preferably dimmable. It is also important to me that the lighting is not too glaring but rather warm white and gentle. Has anyone had experience retrofitting illuminated shelves in the Besta system? Which products – for example, IKEA’s own or third-party – are recommended? And how have you handled the wiring best, possibly with additional power supplies or power strips? I appreciate any detailed answers!
Oh, that sounds like a really great project! I also think warm white light in the Besta cabinet creates a very cozy atmosphere. For cable management, you could use small cable clips from the craft section—they are barely noticeable. I would definitely recommend the dimmer module—you can switch on a very soft light in the evening, almost like a little fireplace fire. And if you like, it can even become a bit of a mood enhancer for your living room!

Make sure your power supply has enough capacity for all the LEDs combined. Thank you, that’s an important point I hadn’t really considered yet. I’m currently planning to install LED strips on three shelves and wanted to connect them all in parallel. Do you think I should use separate power supplies for each shelf, or would one more powerful power supply be sufficient?

From a technical perspective, connectors might also be useful to make the installation modular. I agree, that makes a lot of sense. I might want to modify the shelves later or take them apart if I move. It would be good if the wiring is easy to disconnect. Does anyone have recommendations for types of connectors or other smart solutions? Thanks for your advice!

I am currently planning to equip 3 shelves with LED strips and wanted to connect them all in parallel.Using a more powerful power supply for all three shelves is generally possible as long as it can provide enough current (keep the ampere rating in mind). Advantage: fewer outlets used; disadvantage: if the power supply fails, all shelves go dark. For modularity, it is actually sensible to separate them using connectors (e.g., JST connectors or PCB-compatible quick connectors). This way, you can unplug shelves individually without disconnecting the entire chain. Alternatively, many LED systems also offer compatible snap connectors that work without soldering. If you are reasonably confident with DIY, I recommend connectors over soldering, as this simplifies modifications.I just wanted to add a quick tip: Self-adhesive LED strips are super easy to use, as long as the surface is clean. Pro tip: Wipe the back panel of the Besta lightly with alcohol first; this helps the strips stick better and prevents them from peeling off quickly. Also, if you want to dim the lights, it’s best to get a remote dimmer – it’s really convenient. And don’t worry about running the cables, a bit of patience and calmness will easily make your Diggi-Home lighting upgrade shine! 🌟
