Since the Besta system is very flexible, I prefer not just to stick LED strips on the back panel but to choose an integrated solution that hides the cables and is preferably dimmable. It is also important to me that the lighting is not too glaring but rather warm white and gentle. Has anyone had experience retrofitting illuminated shelves in the Besta system? Which products – for example, IKEA’s own or third-party – are recommended? And how have you handled the wiring best, possibly with additional power supplies or power strips? I appreciate any detailed answers!
Integrating illuminated shelves into the Besta system is actually quite easy, as the design of the frame and back panel makes it simple to hide cables. I recommend using flexible LED strip lights, preferably with a warm white color temperature (2700–3000K), which you can stick behind the shelves. For wiring, I installed small cable channels in the gap between the wall and the furniture; this looks tidy and prevents cable clutter. Important: Make sure your power supply has enough capacity for all the LEDs combined. If you have several illuminated shelves, you can also control multiple zones with separate dimmers, which greatly improves convenience.
A few months ago, I equipped my Besta with self-adhesive LED strips and I’m very happy with the result! :-) It’s especially important to choose the right color temperature and make sure the LEDs are dimmable. A power supply with enough capacity is also a must. Give it a try—it’s definitely worth it, and your room will instantly gain a cozy atmosphere!
I understand that it can be uncertain at first to install LED lighting inside furniture. It can be quite tricky to lay the cables correctly without causing damage later or having visible unsightly spots. I have done this myself and recommend taking your time and, above all, carefully checking the back panel and the side channels to identify possible cable routes. For example, I installed a thin rail as a cable duct along the back panel, which gave me peace of mind because it secures the cables. I also think making the lighting dimmable is essential for setting the right ambiance in the room.

Has there been any evaluation of whether IKEA’s own OMLOPP LEDs can compete in terms of heat generation and color consistency? Additionally, an analysis of how easily they can be replaced in case of failure would be useful, since LEDs built into furniture are often difficult to replace. From a technical perspective, connectors could also be beneficial to make the installation modular. This way, you wouldn’t have to stick all the LED strips at once if you frequently rearrange the shelves.
