Hello everyone,

I recently assembled several Ikea Besta shelves at home. The shelves are already very practical and look nice, but I find their limits in terms of stability and load capacity when subjected to heavy use.

So my question to you is: How can I significantly increase the load capacity of Ikea Besta shelves when they are exposed to heavy loads or frequent use? I am especially interested in tips for reinforcing the shelves, improving the construction, or other effective measures that go beyond the standard instructions and make the shelving unit more durable in the long term.

Perhaps someone here has experience with similar issues or is knowledgeable about furniture reinforcements?

Looking forward to some practical advice and good ideas!

A proven approach is to reinforce the shelves additionally. For the Besta units, you can simply screw an MDF board cut to the right size under the existing shelves. This significantly improves load distribution and prevents sagging.

It is also recommended to secure the shelves to the wall and, if necessary, use corner brackets inside the structure to make the entire construction more rigid. For heavy loads, it is important to ensure even load distribution.

Use stronger shelves from the start, if possible.

Alternatively, install metal brackets under the shelves at the front edge.

Don’t forget wall mounting.

Big topic! I reinforced my Besta shelves with additional wooden cross braces – this made them very stable.

Metal profiles on the edges also help a lot when you put a lot of weight on them.

I think it’s great that you’re asking so precisely, there’s actually more stability possible than you might think!!! 😊

I can easily understand how frustrating it is when shelves start to wobble or sag after a while. At the beginning, I also found it challenging to find the right balance between aesthetics and stability.

What I have learned is that sometimes it helps to reconsider how you use the shelves—for example, storing heavier items on the lower shelves and lighter products higher up. It just feels better when you know the shelving is not being overloaded.

To increase the load-bearing capacity of Ikea Besta shelves under heavy use, I recommend the following:

- Use plywood or MDF boards with a thickness of at least 18 mm (0.7 inches) as additional shelves or reinforcements beneath the original shelves.
- Install extra support strips underneath the shelves, especially in the middle of the compartments.
- Reinforce the corner joints with steel brackets or stronger connectors.
- Securely fix the furniture unit to the wall using suitable anchors and brackets.

These measures are technically sound and significantly improve the permanent allowable load capacity.
