Hello everyone, I plan to mount my Ikea Besta shelving unit on a wall and want to make sure the installation is stable and secure, especially since the shelf will need to support a considerable amount of weight. My wall is made of concrete, and I have the original Ikea wall fixings, but I’m unsure if these are sufficient or if I should use special anchors and screws. Has anyone had experience securely attaching Besta units to concrete walls? What materials work best, what should I pay attention to, and how can I prevent the shelf from becoming loose or even falling over time? I would appreciate well-founded tips and recommendations, including practical advice on preparing the wall and the best approach for drilling and mounting.
Hey, great topic! A few months ago, I attached my Besta to the wall using heavy-duty anchors, and it’s holding perfectly! 🙂 Important: - Use a good hammer drill - Choose high-quality anchors, not cheap ones! - Make sure not to screw the screws in too loosely, or the unit will start to wobble! - Check the stability from time to time. Good luck!

For securely mounting Ikea BESTA units on concrete walls, the following points should be considered: - Use 8mm nylon expansion anchors or metal expansion anchors - Drill holes at least 65mm (2.5 inches) deep to ensure a firm hold - A hammer drill is necessary to create clean holes - Screw length should exceed the anchor length by at least 10mm (0.4 inches) - The number of fixing points depends on the size of the shelving unit and the maximum load capacity - Ensure that the back panel of the BESTA can support the load and avoid overtightening the screws to prevent damage to the material - Check and retighten the screws after 4–6 weeks to compensate for any settling.

By the way, if the back panel of the BESTA shelf is thin, be sure not to overtighten the screws to avoid damaging the material. This is a very important tip, thank you! The back panel of the BESTA is indeed thinner than the side panels. Do you have any experience with how to achieve a secure fit without risking damage to the material? I am considering attaching an additional wooden batten behind the back panel to anchor the screw—what do you think about that?

What do you think about that? That is a very practical addition because it allows you to avoid relying solely on the thin back panel as the attachment point and better distributes the load onto the wooden batten. The batten should be secured to the wall with appropriate screws to ensure it can actually bear the weight. After that, you can screw the BESTA shelf unit into this batten – this also greatly reduces the risk of damage to the back panel material.

The rail should be secured to the wall with appropriate screws to properly support its weight.Exactly, the system consisting of the wall, rail, and shelf essentially creates a composite structure that is much more stable and distributes tensile forces more effectively. In addition to the wooden rail, I would also recommend using longer screws (at least 6 cm (2.4 inches)) to ensure the load is anchored deeper into the wall and to minimize mechanical play. To further increase durability, you can also add felt pads or other materials between the shelf and the wall to dampen any potential vibrations.
