Hello everyone, I’m thinking about how to best design my home office using IKEA Besta as a multifunctional storage solution. Specifically, I’m looking for ideas on how to arrange the Besta system so that it not only provides storage for binders and office supplies but also serves as a room divider, a platform for electronic devices, or even as an extension of the workspace. I’m especially interested in which module combinations work well, how to integrate cable management neatly, and whether there are practical accessories that increase the functionality of Besta in a home office setting. Does anyone have experience or creative implementations? I look forward to any tips, whether practical modifications, interior design advice, or DIY enhancements!

CHRISTOP3310 Mar 2015 15:45I find the topic of Besta as a home office hero really fascinating! Sliding doors are definitely a plus, especially if you don’t want cabinet doors swinging open – or if you have cats that tend to open everything. For LEDs: a few small tips – USB LED strips are easy to use, often low power, and can be discreetly connected behind furniture. See if you can hide power strips with switches, which helps save electricity. And those small organizers you can use inside Besta are invaluable for cables, USB hubs, and even pens. This way, you can keep track of everything even in a tech mess!

Sure, they save space, but you get much less ventilation – especially electronics inside a closed cabinet can quickly cause issues. You shouldn’t underestimate how important airflow is in these cases. Also, cable management with Besta is generally a bit of a mess because most units simply don’t have any openings. If you want to keep cables out of sight, you’ll unfortunately have to drill yourself – IKEA doesn’t exactly make it easy.

I think all the talk about sliding doors at Besta is a bit overrated. I see it differently! Of course, ventilation is important, but you can integrate ventilation slots or simply avoid fully enclosing the equipment. Sliding doors are great when space is limited – which is often the case in home offices. 😄 Cable management is always a DIY project for me; IKEA could definitely improve here, but with a little effort, it works really well.
For ventilation, I would recommend using open shelving or perforated doors, especially for printers and router modules. Although there are no ready-made ventilation solutions for sliding doors, you can, for example, install ventilation grilles into the door panels. For cable management, it is also worthwhile to route cables through self-drilled holes fitted with cable grommets. Ideally, LEDs should be battery-operated or powered via USB, which eliminates the need to find a power outlet.

Brendonla12 Mar 2015 19:44Thanks to everyone for the great and diverse discussion! In summary, I will probably plan a combination of open compartments for ventilation and quick access, as well as closed cabinets with sliding doors, to make the best use of the available space. The idea with LED strips and hidden cable channels also sounds very practical. I will also check whether I can create individual cable pass-throughs for the technology by drilling myself, to keep the overall appearance as neat as possible. If anyone has specific recommendations for suitable LED models or accessories for Besta, I would be happy to receive them. Otherwise, I am really looking forward to assembling and trying out the system myself!
