Hello everyone, I plan to equip my Ikea Platsa shelving unit with LED lighting, but I am looking for practical solutions that can be well integrated without having to modify the shelving or making the installation too complicated. I am especially interested in whether there are already products designed specifically for PLATSA shelves or at least seem to be well compatible, for example with precise dimensions, easy installation, and discreet wiring. Are there any experiences or recommendations regarding DIY or ready-made LED systems that are reliably durable and provide pleasant lighting? Any advice on power supply, dimming options, and possible installation locations within the PLATSA modules would also be very helpful.

Hello Jean40, your question is very well formulated and addresses the needs of many PLATSA users. Basically, Ikea does not offer LED lighting specifically designed for PLATSA, unlike some other series. However, there are several practical solutions that can be adapted well to the dimensions and flexibility of the PLATSA modules.

- First, it is recommended to use narrow, flexible LED strips, preferably with a self-adhesive backing. These can be easily installed inside the frame of the shelving, ideally along the upper inner edge or behind shelves.
- Pay attention to a low profile of the LED strips so that doors or shelves are not obstructed.
- For power supply, plug-in power adapters that can be hidden centrally inside the furniture, or fixed cable channels routed along the back, are suitable options.
- Dimmable lighting is easily achievable with appropriate LED drivers or controllers if you want to vary the lighting atmosphere. Those with remote control or smartphone app are particularly recommended.

It is also important not to use penetrating screws during installation in order to maintain the stability of the furniture piece. Instead, adhesive clips or double-sided tape provide a gentler alternative.

I would be interested to know which PLATSA version you are using, how the space conditions are on site, and approximately how much light you need?

Hello Jean40, I understand your question well, as LED lighting is indeed a popular topic for PLATSA shelves. There are several ways to implement this. I especially recommend flexible LED strips in neutral white or warm white, depending on the atmosphere you want to create.

Some users combine these with motion sensors to activate the light only when the doors are opened or when someone approaches.

For power supply, you can also use Ikea’s own LED systems like the "ÖSTERNÄS" or "LOHALS" lamps if you attach them cleverly to the shelf. They are not specific to PLATSA but work well.

If you are looking for more professional solutions, aluminum LED profiles with diffuser covers are a good choice. They provide more even lighting and shield the LEDs.

How do you imagine installing the lights? Do you want to mount the LEDs visibly on the shelves or hide them?

For clarification: There is no official Ikea LED lighting for PLATSA, as this series is highly modular and does not include pre-made channels like BILLY or BESTÅ. However, the following solutions have proven to be practical:

- Flexible LED strips with 12 V direct current power supply, approximately 5–10 mm (0.2–0.4 inches) wide.
- Mounting options using adhesive tape or clips on the upper inner edge of the units to avoid direct contact with the shelves.
- Use of wireless dimmers or smart switches, since fixed wiring can be challenging depending on the PLATSA configuration.

An important point is heat generation; therefore, the LED strips should be of good quality and produce as little heat as possible.

Cable routing is usually done behind the units, which considers both aesthetics and accessibility for maintenance.

If you have more information about the exact size of your units and the desired lighting intensity, I would be happy to provide more specific product recommendations.

I use flexible LED strips with a self-adhesive backing in my PLATSA shelving unit. Simply stick them to the inside, with the power supply hidden at the top. It works well without any modification.

The shelving unit consists of several modules: 60x60x40 cm (24x24x16 inches), a mix of open sections and ones with doors. I want to illuminate the interior surfaces of the open areas, about 300–400 lumens per module would be ideal. I prefer to keep the wiring discreet, preferably using cable channels at the back. Dimming would be a plus but is not essential.

I’m leaning towards hiding them, either under the shelves or on the inside of the side walls. It’s important to me that the LEDs are not directly visible so that the light appears indirect and soft.
