Hello everyone, I am currently working on optimizing the kitchen lighting and have been focusing particularly on the Ikea Metod LED solutions. I am especially interested in how to install and combine the LED strips and units to achieve sufficient but non-glare lighting that is both functional for cooking and creates a pleasant atmosphere. What tips do you have regarding the arrangement of LED strips under the cabinets, the choice of light color, and dimmability? I am also interested in practical experience with how well the Ikea systems can be meaningfully extended with external dimmers or motion sensors. Perhaps you can share from your experience which solutions and settings work best or what should be avoided.

Only dimmers tested and approved by Ikea should be used for dimmingI completely agree! I initially experimented with third-party dimmers, but that was a failure. The Ikea modules don’t tolerate them well.
I also think it’s very effective to install the LED strips in a way that they don’t shine directly into the eyes but illuminate the work surface nicely. I used small aluminum profiles as a cover at the level of the upper cabinets; this breaks the light really well!

I know the Ikea LED strips; I’m aware they run on 12V, but I’m uncertain about the wiring and control. That’s completely understandable, as most Ikea systems use a kind of proprietary connector. If you want more flexibility, you can cut the connector and wire directly to the 12V cables, but this is only advisable if you have some DIY experience. For control, I recommend not relying solely on the Ikea dimmers but also considering a separate 12V relay or dimmer system that supports IoT compatibility—such as Shelly or Fibaro—while paying close attention to the load and LED driver specifications.
It’s also important for me to know whether you have already installed the wiring or if you are still planning it, so I can give you more precise advice on the installation.

It is also important for me to know whether you have already installed the wiring or if you are still planning itThank you for asking. I am currently planning the wiring from scratch, so everything is still open and I can decide relatively freely how to route the cables to the individual LED zones. The goal is a clean separation and as clear a cable management as possible, which remains modular for future expansions. The junction box for the LED power supplies will be centrally located. I want to minimize visible cables, so I also plan to use cable ducts or recesses under the cabinets.
