Hello everyone, I purchased the Ikea Besta system for my living room to make it as flexible as possible for changing uses. Specifically, I want to modify the shelving unit so that I can use open shelves, closed cabinets, drawers, or a combination of these depending on my needs—possibly also including components for media storage or space for work materials. It is important to me that the modification is modular and doesn’t require major carpentry work, so I can easily change the configuration over time. Are there any practical tips, recommendations for additional components, or modifications you know of for a flexible conversion of the Besta system? Thanks in advance!

Additionally, I would recommend paying special attention to high-quality drawer slides and hinges that are easy to adjust. This way, even during renovations, you can quickly realign the doors and avoid issues with rattling or misaligned components.

Thank you all, you’ve already helped me a lot! One last question: Does anyone know of creative solutions with additional modular elements for customization, such as removable inserts, boxes, compartments, or even lighting, that work well with the Besta system? I want to make the system as multifunctional as possible.

An efficient trick is to use modular inserts made of plastic or fabric boxes that can be easily taken in and out. LED strips on the back panel also add a lot of flexibility and atmosphere. There are modular organizers available from third-party suppliers that can be easily installed in the compartments. This way, your Besta remains easily adjustable and multifunctional.

You can also buy small shelf attachments or insert frames that can be placed on or glued to the Besta units. This creates additional levels and makes the storage space more dynamic.

I agree, these boxes are ideal because you don’t need any screwing when remodeling. You can also retrofit LED lighting using battery-powered options without much effort.

Perfect, that makes things much more interesting. I will start by experimenting with boxes and lighting, and then plan the fronts and shelves based on that. Thank you for your support!
