Hello everyone,

I recently assembled several Ikea Besta shelves at home. The shelves are already very practical and look nice, but I find their limits in terms of stability and load capacity when subjected to heavy use.

So my question to you is: How can I significantly increase the load capacity of Ikea Besta shelves when they are exposed to heavy loads or frequent use? I am especially interested in tips for reinforcing the shelves, improving the construction, or other effective measures that go beyond the standard instructions and make the shelving unit more durable in the long term.

Perhaps someone here has experience with similar issues or is knowledgeable about furniture reinforcements?

Looking forward to some practical advice and good ideas!

Install additional support battens under the shelves, especially in the center of the shelf compartments.

This is particularly important because the middle sections of the shelves in Besta shelving units typically represent the weak points. A central support made of wood or metal reduces the span length and significantly decreases sagging.

Don’t forget to distribute the weight evenly.

Avoid storing heavy items in just one compartment; spread them across several.

Also, watch out for loose parts that could compromise stability.

Really interesting to see everything coming together here! 😊 I also reinforced my Besta shelves with matching crossbars and noticed that they feel much more sturdy.

It is also important to regularly check if the screws are still tight – this helps prevent the shelves from loosening unintentionally.

You can see that a bit of effort is definitely worth it!

Thank you for all the constructive tips so far!

I am also wondering if it makes sense to add extra intermediate panels inside the shelves or to insert modular reinforcements?

Are there perhaps special fasteners or material combinations that work particularly well with the Besta material and increase the load-bearing capacity without affecting the appearance too much?

Yes, that can definitely have a positive effect. Additional central dividers provide load-bearing support points between the shelves and prevent sagging.

For the connection, I recommend sturdy wooden dowels or countersunk screws to keep the surface flush.

In terms of materials, you should use the same or similarly dense engineered wood panels (such as plywood) to avoid stress differences.
