RolfbarHello everyone,
I have the following problem: I want to assemble an Ikea Besta piece of furniture, but unfortunately, I no longer have any of the original screws. My specific question is: Is it possible to build the BESTA system without the original screws without noticeably compromising the stability and load-bearing capacity of the furniture? I am especially interested in practical experience and recommendations regarding alternative fastening materials or techniques that are compatible with the construction of the BESTA components.
Thanks in advance for your opinions!

Hey Rolfbar,
great question! I once assembled a BESTA unit where the screws were missing – but I managed by using suitable replacement screws from the hardware store. The important thing is to use the correct material (steel, not cheap screws) and the right length, otherwise it simply won’t hold.
You shouldn’t underestimate that Ikea relies heavily on dowels and precise holes for BESTA, so you can’t just cram in any screws. But with a little care and patience, it works fine – just don’t expect to get it perfect on the first try. 😎

I can relate well to the question and would like to add: The BESTA system is based on a combination of wood panels, cam locks, and specially shaped dowels. Although the original screws are optimized for this purpose, substitute screws from specialized suppliers can work as long as they are similar to the originals—for example, in terms of material thickness and quality.
However, you should keep in mind that low-quality screws can compromise stability and, over time, lead to material damage or loosening. My advice would be to measure the original screws precisely and use suitable replacement screws that are also galvanized or made of stainless steel to prevent corrosion.

Guys, honestly, I think it’s a bit risky to just use replacement screws if you don’t know what the originals are capable of. Ikea selected the screws and fittings for a reason, to ensure everything fits together perfectly.
I would argue that if you don’t exactly match the properties of the original screws and anchors, you will definitely lose some stability. Those who build cheaply usually end up with lower durability as well. Apart from that, the whole structure is designed to make the furniture stable and secure—alternatives simply undermine that.

Hey Rolfbar! I assembled my BESTA completely without the original screws because I no longer had them. It’s important that the replacement screws are the same size and preferably have the same thread pitch. I used stainless steel screws – they are stronger than the originals. Important: Use appropriate wall plugs (anchors), otherwise the wood might give way. I was really surprised how good the result turned out! With a bit of care when tightening, a piece of furniture like this will easily hold up for years.
