Hello everyone, I am currently planning the assembly of an Ikea Besta furniture system and came across the question of which screws are best suited for the assembly. Ideally, the screws should not only hold securely from a mechanical standpoint but also fit the pre-drilled holes and connection points. I am particularly wondering whether it is better to use the original screws or if there are higher-quality alternatives among standard screws that might be more durable or stronger—for example, regarding material or thread type. Does anyone have experience and can recommend which screws work best for assembling the Besta system, ensuring everything is stable while still being easy to install?
For stability, the length of the screws should also be considered. Screws that are too long can damage the material on the backside, while screws that are too short do not provide sufficient grip. For BESTA, screws with a length of 30-40 mm (1.2-1.6 inches) are usually optimal, depending on the component.

I have had good experiences with Torx screws. They are easier to tighten without slipping.Exactly. Using Torx screws is especially beneficial for furniture assembly because the screwdriver or bit fits better and requires less force. This also reduces the risk of damaging screw heads.

A good alternative is also chipboard screws, which are available from specialist suppliers. However, as mentioned, it is essential to pay attention to the correct thread size to avoid damaging the intended material. That helps me a lot already. Thank you very much! I am still curious: Does anyone have experience with whether the screws should be oiled or lubricated during assembly to prevent damage to the holes or to make screwing in easier?

Lubricating the screws can indeed make them easier to drive in and reduce friction. However, there is a risk that over time the screws may loosen because their grip in the chipboard becomes less secure. If you can retighten the screws later, this is not a problem; otherwise, I would recommend avoiding lubrication and instead screwing in slowly and carefully.
