Hello everyone,

I have an Ikea Metod kitchen with white fronts and am uncertain about how to properly care for them without damaging the surface or leaving unwanted marks. It is important to me that the fronts maintain their shine over time and do not develop discoloration or scratches.

Which cleaning products are recommended? Should I use special care products, or are mild all-purpose cleaners sufficient? Also, what is the recommended cleaning frequency? Are there any well-known do’s and don’ts, especially regarding the lacquer or foil coating used in Metod?

I would appreciate practical tips, ideally including a brief note on what to watch out for to avoid damaging the material.

Thanks in advance for your support!

Hello kinlawso42,

You have asked a good question. The topic is indeed a bit more complex because Ikea Metod fronts can have different finishes, such as melamine, foil (veneer), or acrylic lacquer. I will generally focus here on white, smooth fronts like yours.

The most important point for care is to avoid aggressive cleaning agents. These can damage the surface, reduce the gloss, or even cause small cracks in the foil. Instead, you should follow these guidelines:

- Use lukewarm water with a mild, pH-neutral dish soap
- Always wipe with a soft, lint-free cloth (microfiber cloths are ideal)
- For stubborn or greasy stains, you can treat them with some dish soap and warm water, but never use abrasive cleaners or solvents
- Avoid abrasive sponges or scratching tools to prevent damaging the surface

Regarding frequency: Regular wiping to remove dust and light dirt is sufficient to prevent deep stains. After cooking, a quick wipe is recommended to remove grease splatters.

It is also helpful to polish the fronts with a dry, clean cloth after cleaning to avoid water spots.

Did I miss anything, or is there a specific surface you want me to address for special care instructions?

Glamo raises an important point: The exact type of surface largely determines the maintenance requirements.

To add to this, IKEA specifies cleaning recommendations for Metod fronts that have proven effective:

- Do not use aggressive or harsh chemicals such as ammonia or alcohol-based cleaners.
- Remove liquids as soon as possible, since prolonged exposure can damage laminates or coatings.
- For satin or high-gloss fronts, occasional use of a household plastic cleaner is recommended.
- Also, fingerprints on high-gloss fronts are almost unavoidable, but regular gentle cleaning without pressure helps reduce them.

As glamo mentioned, microfiber cloths are the best choice. When in doubt, test cleaning products first on an inconspicuous area.

Overall, with IKEA Metod: A well-planned, gentle cleaning routine is key, rather than using particularly strong products.

Hello kinlawso42,

here is a small guide on how to properly care for Ikea Metod kitchen fronts:

1. Wipe the fronts regularly with a microfiber cloth to remove dust and light dirt.
2. For greasy residues, use a mild dish soap in lukewarm water.
3. Do not use abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals, as they can damage the surface.
4. If possible, follow up by wiping with a damp, clean cloth to remove any soap residue.
5. Finally, polish with a dry cloth to prevent water spots.

Common mistakes include letting cleaners sit on the surface and using scratching cloths or pads.

In short: gentle and regular care is the best approach here.

Typical mistakes are: leaving cleaners on too long and using abrasive cloths or pads.

I completely agree with that. In the beginning, I tried too many different things and nearly fell into a trap with abrasive products – fortunately, only minor scratches resulted.

Another thing I often forget: after cleaning, it’s helpful to take a short break and let the surfaces dry. Especially on light-colored finishes, this makes it easier to spot streaks or residues that you might otherwise miss.

I think it also saves frustration in the long run because you don’t have to keep reworking the surfaces. How do you handle wiping down or polishing after cleaning? Can you overdo it?
