Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I purchased a kitchen with the Metod system from Ikea and am now looking for reliable tips on long-term care of the kitchen fronts. I am especially interested in how to clean the surface materials—whether lacquer, melamine, or foil—gently and effectively without damaging or wearing them out.

Which cleaning products and methods are suitable for daily cleaning as well as occasional thorough maintenance? Are there any specific practices or substances I should definitely avoid to prevent discoloration, scratches, or other wear? I look forward to your experiences and recommendations, as I want to enjoy my kitchen for as long as possible.

For daily cleaning, simply use a damp, soft cloth with a small amount of mild dish soap. Do not use harsh cleaners or abrasive materials, as they can easily damage the surface.

Hello Jon_sonja,

For the care of your Ikea Metod kitchen fronts, I recommend paying close attention to the type of material used. Metod fronts come in several variations:
- Painted fronts: These are more sensitive to abrasive sponges or harsh cleaning agents. Therefore, use only a soft microfiber cloth, slightly damp, possibly with a few drops of mild dish soap. After cleaning, wipe again with clean water to avoid any residue.

- Melamine-coated fronts: These are somewhat more durable but should also not be treated with strong cleaners. Avoid aggressive chemicals such as solvents or bleach.

- Foil-covered fronts: Be careful with mechanical stress here as the foil can peel off or be damaged. Fingerprints can be removed with a mild soapy water solution.

In general: no abrasive sponges, no stiff brushes, no solvents. For stains, try to act promptly to prevent buildup and discoloration.

I’m happy to provide additional tips for specific stains if needed.

The care of Ikea Metod kitchen fronts should generally follow the manufacturer’s recommendations, especially since the surfaces can vary significantly.

A general guideline is:
- Daily cleaning: natural soap- or detergent-free cleaners with a soft cloth or sponge
- Avoiding abrasive cleaners or those containing strong chemicals
- For stubborn stains, use special plastic cleaners that do not damage the surface

Further prevention includes protecting the fronts from direct sunlight and intense heat sources, as these can roughen or discolor the material over time.

I recommend treating the fronts at least once every quarter with a gentle care oil or special surface care products for kitchen fronts, provided they are not lacquered. This helps make the surface more resistant to dirt and stains.

Thanks in advance for the quick responses.

Could you please specify which cleaning agents you would avoid exactly? For example, acetone, denatured alcohol, or certain common household kitchen cleaners?

Also, it would be helpful to know the best way to deal with grease stains around the cooking area without damaging the surface.

As an addition: For greasy stains, I recommend a mixture of warm water and a drop of mild dish soap. This removes grease without damaging the surface.

Solvents such as acetone, turpentine, or denatured alcohol should generally be avoided, as they can damage the surface coating and cause fading or peeling of the film.

After cleaning with the dish soap solution, you can also wipe the area with clean water and gently polish it dry with a soft cloth to prevent streaks.
