Hello everyone,

I am currently facing the challenge of achieving optimal light distribution in my newly planned Ikea Metod kitchen. The kitchen has a U-shape with a work surface of approximately 3.5 x 2.2 meters (11.5 x 7.2 feet), and I want to ensure that all work areas, especially the cutting and cooking zones, are evenly illuminated without causing glare or unnecessary shadows.

My detailed questions:
- Which types of lighting are advisable (e.g., LED under-cabinet lights, ceiling spotlights, recessed lights), and how should I best combine them?
- Are there specific recommendations for dimmable lighting concepts or color temperatures that should be considered, especially when planning a Metod kitchen?
- How would you position the fixtures to ensure good lighting for both the work surfaces and the cabinets?

I want to approach the planning as precisely as possible and welcome any tips on cable management or achieving uniform light spots. Looking forward to your experiences and recommendations!

I would recommend LED under-cabinet lights directly below the upper cabinets. They provide focused lighting on the countertops. Recessed ceiling lights can be added to minimize shadows. Important: The LEDs should have a color temperature of around 3000-4000 Kelvin.

Hello peozar,

I’m happy to provide you with a structured overview for optimal lighting distribution in the Metod kitchen.

1. General lighting:
Install recessed ceiling lights or spotlights evenly across the entire kitchen area. Make sure the spacing between the lights is chosen to avoid any dark spots.

2. Task lighting:

That’s correct; LEDs under the wall cabinets are ideal to prevent shadows on the work surfaces. The light strips should be glare-free and have a high color rendering index (CRI > 80) to keep the colors of food looking natural.

3. Additional accent lighting:
If you have shelves or decorative elements, small LED spotlights can be used to highlight them.

4. Color temperature and dimming:
A neutral to slightly warm color temperature (3500K) is recommended, as it makes working more comfortable. Dimmable lighting helps adjust the atmosphere—for example, bright when cooking and softer at the table.

5. Positioning:
Plan the LED strips to illuminate the entire work area, and avoid placing ceiling spotlights too close to the cabinets to prevent casting shadows at head height.

Summary: Use a combination of evenly distributed ceiling lighting and focused LED under-cabinet lighting with dimming control and a neutral color temperature for the best results.

Hello peozar,

I agree with Jensson and would like to add two practical tips based on my own experience with a Metod kitchen:

- Use flexible LED strips that you can install behind the baseboards. This provides pleasant, indirect lighting and prevents the floor from appearing too dark.

- Try a color temperature around 3000K (5700°F), which is a great compromise between cozy and functional – I find it really creates a nice atmosphere in the kitchen without losing effectiveness for tasks.

I love that too! A dimmable setup can be a real game-changer, especially when the kitchen is the central hub of the home. 😊

Don’t forget: make sure to have good cable management – hidden and inside the cabinets – it results in a much more premium overall look.
