Hello everyone, I am currently planning the design of my new kitchen with Ikea Metod, but unfortunately have very limited space available. My main question is: How can Ikea Metod kitchens be effectively designed in small spaces without sacrificing functionality and storage? I am especially interested in how to plan the layout to make the most of the work surfaces and which cabinet types or accessories work best to keep small kitchens practical. If anyone has experience with very tight kitchen spaces, I would appreciate tips on clever solutions or example setups.

Hello ennobu31, I completely understand how challenging a small kitchen can be, especially when you still need plenty of storage space. With Ikea Metod, it’s a good idea to start by measuring carefully and then focus mainly on tall base cabinets and corner solutions. The benefits of pull-out interior organizers and drawer inserts are often underestimated, but they really make the most of the available space. Additionally, you can create more storage without reducing the countertop area by using wall cabinets up to the ceiling or shelves in niches. Also consider narrow tall cabinets for the oven and refrigerator to save space. If you like, I can post an example with measurements and cabinet types.

Keep work distances short, use pull-out cabinets instead of hinged doors, and plan vertically whenever possible – this creates significantly more usable space in small kitchens.

That is, of course, correct, but I would ask: How do you define "short" in really small spaces? Sometimes focusing only on short distances can create a sort of dead end if the space is not used thoughtfully.

My suggestion: Instead of just concentrating on short distances, one should also prioritize accessibility to key elements. Good planning follows the classic work triangle principle between the stove, sink, and refrigerator—even in limited space.

For this, Ikea Metod offers, among other things, flexible cabinet inserts and corner carousels that should not be underestimated. Efficient storage is just as important as the arrangement of work surfaces, especially when space is tight.

For efficient use of limited space in Ikea Metod kitchens, I recommend the following well-reviewed steps:
- Accurately measure the room’s height, width, and depth
- Plan with maximum cabinet heights, for example, 80 or 100 cm (31 or 39 inches) base cabinets, to increase storage capacity with minimal footprint
- Use corner solutions with carousel or LeMans fittings to make optimal use of otherwise hard-to-reach corners
- Use pull-out and drawer modules instead of shelves, as they provide much better organization and access
- Use tall cabinets for kitchen appliances and pantry items as storage multipliers
- Design work surfaces modularly, for example with foldable elements or removable shelves

It is essential to do the planning digitally and virtually combine Ikea products to avoid buying mistakes.

I can confirm that! I had a very small kitchen myself, and flexible elements often helped me create more space. Especially in tight areas, this can make a big difference in how comfortable and functional the kitchen ultimately is.

The right lighting also plays a role – built-in LED strips under wall cabinets help by illuminating specific work areas and making the space appear larger.

In general: patience during planning, thinking through every corner, and even small adjustments can have a big impact. Keep your spirits up, space is usually tricky but solvable!
