Hello everyone, I am currently planning a redesign of my small kitchen and am considering using IKEA Metod cabinets. I am particularly interested in how to make these kitchen units both functional and stylish in small spaces. What tips and tricks do you have for this? How can storage be optimized without making the kitchen feel cluttered? And what design ideas do you have for integrating the Metod cabinets in a modern and appealing way? I look forward to your experiences and recommendations!

Here is a brief guide for functional and stylish IKEA Metod kitchens in small spaces:

1. Analyze the room dimensions: Measure length, width, and height precisely.
2. Plan with cabinet widths of 40, 60, or 80 cm (16, 24, or 32 inches) for best compatibility.
3. Use wall cabinets up to the ceiling to maximize vertical space.
4. Interior drawers, e.g., for pots or spices, make access easier and help keep things organized.
5. When choosing materials, consider matte fronts or wood finishes that reduce reflections and create a warmer atmosphere.
6. Slim-shaped handles avoid heavy visual interruptions.
7. Choose a bright and continuous countertop surface to prevent design breaks.

Common mistakes: wall cabinets that are not tall enough, resulting in wasted storage space; or too many small cabinets, which can make the room feel cluttered.

I’m happy to help with IKEA planner tips if you have a floor plan.

If you want to make good use of the space, I recommend installing tall cabinets with storage for appliances and equipping the lower work area with drawers. This makes the kitchen functional.

Does anyone have ideas on how to create a cozy atmosphere using decor or a mix of materials?

I agree, this is important. Small kitchens can quickly feel cold and sterile, but using natural materials like wood finishes and warm colors in accessories can add a lot of coziness. Plants also help to make the space feel more lively. From my point of view, it’s important to feel comfortable even in a small area and not have the impression of being in just a pure workspace.

The stylish factor usually comes from details such as handles or lighting. LED strips under wall cabinets create atmosphere and make the work surface appear larger.

Pull-out drawers inside cabinets, for example for pots or spices, make usage easier and help keep things organized.

I agree with that. Additionally, when choosing pull-out drawers, it’s important to consider their load capacity, especially since pots can be quite heavy. Some IKEA Metod drawers only support a few kilograms (pounds). I would recommend opting for the stronger versions from IKEA or third-party suppliers. It’s also advisable to choose doors with soft-close dampers to reduce noise – this is very beneficial in small kitchens where everything is close together.

I can confirm that both tall cabinets and practical pull-out drawers offer great potential in small kitchens. Which appliances are you planning to integrate? Oven, microwave?

Finally, a tip regarding maintenance: Matte surfaces look nice but are more prone to grease stains and fingerprints, so regular cleaning with mild dish soap is recommended. Glossy finishes are easier to clean but reflect a lot, which can be distracting in small rooms. Choose based on your daily routine and the amount of upkeep you’re willing to do.
