Hello everyone, I am currently facing the challenge of cleaning my matte IKEA Metod fronts without leaving unsightly streaks. I am generally familiar with the typical cleaning methods – such as wiping with a microfiber cloth and a mild cleaning agent – but I have the problem that streaks often appear, especially on the matte surfaces.

I am particularly interested in which cleaning products are best suited to thoroughly and gently clean the surfaces without affecting the matte finish or leaving streaks afterward. Additionally, it would be helpful to know if there are any special tips regarding technique – for example, the type of cloth, the cleaning motions, or drying methods.

Does anyone have long-term experience or perhaps even a proven approach that works particularly well? I look forward to your responses!

Hey Cassian – great that you brought up this topic here! From my own experience, I can say: luckily, it’s not rocket science, but it only works really well once you’ve got the method down!

What really helped me:
- very important: never spray the cleaner directly onto the surface; always apply it to the cloth first!
- also, I use a slightly damp microfiber cloth on my surfaces; if it’s too wet, streaks appear immediately.
- afterwards, go over the entire area again with a second dry cloth.

It then looks like new!

Don’t give up – it might take 2-3 tries to get the feel for the right moisture level and pressure – but when you get it right, the shine is great and the matte finish stays intact 😊

Hello Cassian, I see you have already researched the topic thoroughly, so here is a brief addition regarding microfiber cloths:

Not all microfiber cloths are the same – those with very densely woven, ultra-fine fibers are better suited because they effectively capture dirt without scratching the surface or leaving residues.

Here is a short guide that I recommend:

- Rinse the microfiber cloth in clean water before use and let it dry well to remove any manufacturing residues.
- For cleaning, dampen the cloth with a mild solution and wring it out thoroughly so it is almost dry.
- Change the cloth frequently during cleaning and wipe the surfaces dry quickly each time.

One important question: Will you be cleaning the fronts once only, or are you looking for a method for regular maintenance? The effort required can vary depending on the frequency.

I find it fascinating how quickly certain “truths” about matte surfaces spread, without really taking an objective look at the processes involved.

My theory is that the so-called “streak effect” is often not a sign of poor cleaning but a result of the texture of the matte surface itself.

Instead of always debating which cloth or product is better, maybe we could also consider that minimal visual residues are simply part of the material. This actually has the advantage that you don’t have to keep wiping repeatedly, saving effort.

Of course, this is my somewhat provocative viewpoint — but who here has ever considered that the “problem” might not actually be a problem at all?

Always use a clean, soft microfiber cloth. This is important because rough or linty cloths can cause streaks.

Thanks for the tip, I actually used a somewhat rougher cloth before, so that could be the reason.

So far mostly a standard all-purpose cleaner, which might be too harsh, and a regular cotton cloth – I can already see some areas for improvement there.

I want to establish a method for regular maintenance that is effective but also practical for everyday use. I don’t want to put in a lot of effort for every minor cleaning, but still want to keep the surfaces clean and streak-free.

Do you have any recommendations on whether special cleaners are worthwhile for regular use, or if simple dishwashing detergent solutions are sufficient?
