Hello everyone, I am looking for a reliable method to clean Malm furniture – especially the white painted versions – without leaving stubborn residues or streaks on the surface. So far, I have tried various cleaning products, but I have either encountered sticky film residues or streaking. Does anyone know of a cleaning method or specific products that work particularly well to gently yet thoroughly clean Malm furniture? It is especially important to me that no unpleasant residues remain, as I use the furniture frequently and want it to look clean again quickly. Thanks in advance!
The best method for cleaning painted surfaces like the Malm furniture is to use a mild all-purpose cleaner that ideally contains no waxes or silicones. It is recommended to dilute the cleaner in lukewarm water and wipe the surface with a lint-free cloth. Afterward, it is important to immediately polish the surface with a dry, clean microfiber cloth to prevent water spots and streaks. Avoid harsh abrasives or alcohol-based cleaners, as these can damage the paint.
What I find is often overlooked in many tips: the cloths themselves can cause residues, either because they are too damp or shed fibers. Additionally, not every surface can be treated the same way. An important point for Malm furniture is also the age and level of use – older finishes are more sensitive. Does anyone have experience with whether it’s better to use specific care products from IKEA or if standard cleaners really work better?
Thank you for the first helpful tips!
Regarding your question, dinano: So far, I haven't used any special IKEA care products because I'm unsure if they are really effective and whether they might leave residues. My furniture is relatively new (about 1 year old) and is used daily. Residues are often visible after drying, especially in areas I touch frequently, like recessed handles.

They often collect a lot of dirt. 🙂 For my Malm cabinets, I always used a diluted vinegar cleaner – it worked wonderfully for me without leaving any residue! Just mix one part vinegar essence with 10 parts water, dampen slightly, and then wipe dry. It leaves the surface streak-free and smells fresh. Important: don’t make it too wet!
