Hello everyone,

I have a detailed question regarding the assembly of Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets, specifically about mounting brackets.

I am planning to build my kitchen using the Metod cabinets and intend to use mounting brackets for additional stability to improve the connection between the units.

What are your best tips and experiences for attaching mounting brackets to Metod cabinet boxes? What should I pay attention to when installing the brackets, which screws and tools are recommended, and are there common mistakes I should avoid?

Additionally, I would be interested to know if you prefer certain positions for the mounting brackets (e.g., only at the top, bottom, or also in the middle) to ensure the cabinet is as stable and load-bearing as possible. I look forward to detailed and well-founded answers.

Thanks in advance!

Hello jairbo,

great that you are approaching this topic so thoroughly. I’m happy to provide you with a structured response that should help with your project.

1. Selection of mounting brackets:
- I recommend galvanized steel brackets, preferably 30x30 mm or 40x40 mm (1.2x1.2 inches or 1.6x1.6 inches), depending on how heavy the cabinets will be.
- Make sure the brackets aren’t too thick so that you can easily attach them behind coverings later on.

2. Positioning:
- Ideally, the brackets should always be attached at the edges of the cabinets, so at the top and bottom as well as on the sides, if possible.
- It’s important that brackets are placed at every joint: i.e., left/right between two cabinets and top/bottom between the countertop and the floor.

3. Screws & tools:
- Don’t use the original screws from Ikea for the brackets; instead, use galvanized chipboard screws (e.g., 25-35 mm long, Ø 4 mm (1-1.4 inches long, Ø 0.16 inches)).
- A cordless drill with Torx bits is practical for precise and quick work.

4. Assembly procedure:
- First, assemble the cabinets according to the instructions.
- Then attach the brackets at the designated spots and secure them with screws.
- Pay attention to achieving a right angle (90°) when screwing in order to avoid any distortions.

5. Common mistakes and tips:
- Don’t use too many brackets, as this can become confusing and affect alignment.
- Use brackets not only for stability but also for load distribution, especially when mounting heavy appliances or countertops.

In summary: mounting brackets are great for improving stability, especially in larger kitchen units. The key is correct positioning and appropriate screws to prevent damage to the panels.

I hope this helps. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask!

Simply screw the mounting brackets to the inside edges of the cabinet sides – at the top and bottom – this provides the best stability. Use 4x30 mm (1/8x1 1/4 inch) chipboard screws for fastening.

I think that’s a very cautious approach. Sometimes having a lot more stability can’t hurt, especially if the kitchen will later be heavily used or if there are children in the house. Why not be generous with brackets? I often see that taken too lightly.

Also: As clever as IKEA Metod cabinet assembly is, the side panels are often too thin to support the weight of heavy cabinets on their own. Brackets or not – in my opinion, a strong construction requires plenty of fixing points.

I do understand that someone might want a neat solution. But we’re talking about a kitchen here, not a picture frame. So: better safe than sloppy.

Interesting point, but I would make a distinction here. Of course, stability is important, but too many brackets can also create stress within the wooden structure and potentially cause long-term damage—such as cracks, warped panels, or uneven load distribution.

My suggestion: assess where loads are applied (for example, heavy drawers or tall cabinets). Use brackets selectively and only in truly critical areas. Otherwise, rely more on strong gluing and original connection fittings.

Additionally, it’s important to use carpenter’s angles and screws of suitable length to avoid piercing or weakening the panels.

I would like to add that it is essential to use a spirit level when attaching the mounting brackets. This is the only way to prevent the cabinets from being crooked, which can cause issues with the fronts later on.

Other important points:
- Pre-drilling the screw holes can help, especially with the thinner panels of the Metod series, to prevent splitting.
- Evenly positioning the brackets ensures better load distribution.
- For tall cabinets, it is advisable to place the brackets more generously, as these carry a greater load.

A good cordless drill, a spirit level, and a set of suitable screwdriver/Torx bits are all you need. It’s best to choose screws that are not too long to avoid drilling through the back panel.
