maceobaHello everyone,
I am planning to install the Ikea Metod toe kicks in my new kitchen and want to ensure they are both securely and attractively fixed. Specifically, I am interested in the best way to attach the toe kicks so that they not only hold firmly but also provide a consistent appearance without gaps or unsightly joints.
I understand there are various fastening methods—such as gluing, screwing, or using clips—but I am looking for a solution that is practical and durable for everyday use while complementing the design of the Metod fronts. If there are any special tools, drilling techniques, or materials that work particularly well, I would appreciate any recommendations.
Does anyone have experience with attaching these toe kicks in kitchen settings? I look forward to tips and also to advice on what to avoid to prevent problems later.
Thanks in advance!

First, I would recommend aligning the walls and base rails as precisely as possible before installation and checking that all surfaces are clean, level, and dry. This will ensure a better fit for the baseboards later on.
Ikea Metod baseboards are usually made of plastic with a relatively smooth backside. While gluing is possible, it is not recommended for kitchens due to exposure to water and moisture. Therefore, the supplied clips are generally the best solution.
For installing the clips:
- Attach the clips to the cabinet bottom or base rail using appropriate screws.
- Pre-drill holes to avoid material damage.
- Place the clips at intervals of 30-40cm (12-16 inches) for even and stable fixation.
It is important that the baseboards are pressed slightly forward into the clips after hooking in, so they fit firmly and no gaps form between the baseboard and the floor.
If your kitchen floor is uneven, you can support the baseboards with small spacers or adjust the height by screwing variably.
Finally, I would recommend using corner connectors in matching colors on the end pieces to create neat and visually appealing transitions at the corners.
What kind of floor do you have? Is the surface leveled, or are there irregularities that need to be taken into account?

What does your floor look like? Do you have a leveled surface, or are there any irregularities that need to be taken into account?Good question! My floor is tiled and relatively even, but I noticed small variations of 3 to 5 millimeters (about 1/8 to 3/16 inches) in some spots. I assume this could become noticeable when installing the baseboards.
I was considering whether using a combination of clips and additional adhesive might help to compensate for small gaps at the floor. Do you think this is a good idea, or are there better methods to address minor unevenness without losing the ability to remove the baseboards later?

If you apply adhesive between the baseboard and the floor, you may lose the ability to easily remove it later in case of renovations. Alternatively, you could use flexible sealant that visually hides small gaps while remaining somewhat elastic.
Another option is height-adjustable baseboard feet – these adjustable pedestals help compensate for floor unevenness up to a few millimeters (inches) and can be individually adjusted. This way, you can align the baseboards neatly and still retain the option for removal or readjustment.
For installation with clips and pedestals:
- Use clips for side mounting
- Position pedestals in the corners or critical spots
- This keeps the baseboard secure and visually uniform
If the irregularities are very minor, these methods are usually sufficient. I would only recommend adhesive for truly permanent fastening.
Hello, I can only confirm that the Metod baseboards fit very securely with the clips! 😊
Especially when you position the clips correctly and firmly snap the baseboards into place, everything holds very tightly. I was surprised how well it holds up – even with heavy kitchen use!
A small tip from me: take your time to align everything precisely; it will look really great and you’ll avoid unsightly gaps.
If it’s your first time, you’ll see it’s worth spacing the clips neither too close nor too far apart, about every 30cm (12 inches). You can really feel how stable everything becomes!
You can definitely do it! If you need more tips, just ask here 🙂
