Hello everyone, I am currently planning the installation of the baseboards for my new IKEA Metod kitchen and want to mount the baseboards properly. My main question is: What are the best fastening methods to securely and permanently attach the baseboards without damaging the wall or the substructure? Ideally, I would appreciate advice on preparation, the right materials, screws or alternative fasteners, as well as tips on how to compensate for uneven surfaces. I am also interested in whether any special considerations are needed for Metod baseboards compared to classic baseboards. I look forward to expert suggestions!

Hello Okyanuste, I’m happy to provide you with a clear guide for properly attaching IKEA Metod baseboards:

- Preparation: Make sure the substructure (i.e., the kitchen base cabinets or the kickboard profile) is secure and level to avoid issues during installation.

- Fastening materials: IKEA Metod baseboards are usually fixed with special clips included in the package. These clips are screwed into the substructure, not directly into the wall.

- Installing the clips: Space the clips every 40 to 50 cm (16 to 20 inches) along the baseboard, choosing the spacing to ensure the board is firmly held without sagging.

- Attaching the baseboard: The baseboard is then simply snapped onto the secured clips, providing a neat appearance and allowing for easy removal if needed.

- Tip for uneven surfaces: If the floor or substructure is not completely level, you can place small spacers under the clips to align the baseboard properly.

It’s important not to drill screws into the baseboard itself, as the material can be easily damaged. Good luck with your project!

I would like to add that using the original IKEA clips is technically the best method, as they are precisely designed and do not disrupt the appearance. Alternatively, strong double-sided adhesive tapes can be used if mechanical fastening is not possible.

Furthermore, it is important to ensure that all sealing measures on the floor and walls are completed before installing the baseboards to prevent future moisture issues.

Proper installation not only provides stability but also makes later removal easier if needed.

I find the discussion quite interesting, but I wonder if the effort to use the original IKEA clips is really necessary. Often, these small clips tend to look more like toys. Honestly – who protects the baseboard when children hang on it or when it gets bumped while vacuuming?

In my opinion, it’s better to attach the baseboard in a traditional way using screws and appropriate wall plugs. This provides a truly secure fixing that can withstand everyday use. And honestly, the appearance? That can be elegantly managed as well.

I’m curious why everyone is so enthusiastic about the clips.

Good point, TISON. However, the clips are designed to handle exactly those kinds of stresses. The original Method baseboards with clips hold surprisingly well and are sufficiently sturdy for normal household use. They might fail under extreme mechanical strain, but that is usually not the case.

If you expect really heavy use, I recommend additionally securing the baseboard at the bottom with small, almost invisible screws. This creates a hybrid solution that combines appearance and durability.

Thank you for the detailed description! May I clarify something: when attaching the clips to the substructure of the Metod cabinets, is there a recommended mounting position – for example, exactly on the front edge, or more towards the back? Also, how should they be aligned if the cabinets are slightly uneven or not perfectly flat? In my case, the floor is a bit uneven, but I want to avoid the baseboard being “wobbly” later on.

Are there any special tips for fixing the baseboard to the Metod cabinets so that it sits flush and stable over the long term? Thanks!
