Hello everyone, I am currently looking into how to readjust the doors of the IKEA Billy bookshelf. Specifically, some of the doors don’t close properly anymore or hang slightly crooked.
I know that the hinges can be adjusted, but what is the best way to proceed to get the doors properly aligned and flush again?
Is there a systematic process or any special tips for situations where, for example, a door has too much gap at the top corner while the bottom fits perfectly? I am working with the original BILLY door set and want to avoid any unnecessary damage.
I would appreciate any helpful feedback!

If a door is positioned too far out at the top corner, you should start by adjusting the lateral setting on the upper hinge. Thanks for this detailed explanation! That's exactly the case with my door: it sticks out too far at the top, but fits well at the bottom.
I haven’t tried loosening the hinges yet because I wasn’t sure if the screws on the frame are actually the right ones for adjusting the height.
Also, you mentioned the depth adjustment – I hadn’t even considered that before.
Are there any tips on how to tell exactly when the depth needs to be adjusted? I just notice that sometimes the door doesn’t fully close against the frame, but I’m not sure if that’s due to the adjustment.
Hello Onlemi,
I understand your questions well and would like to summarize all the points once again:
1. If the door protrudes too far at the top, the side adjustment on the upper hinge usually helps.
2. You adjust the height by loosening the screws that hold the hinge to the cabinet and then raising or lowering the door.
3. The depth adjustment (how tightly the door fits against the frame) is made if the door does not close evenly or gets stuck.
To find the correct setting for the depth, simply turn the corresponding screw on the hinge and observe whether the door closes more tightly or loosely against the cabinet. This way, you can find the optimal position by feel.
From my own experience, I recommend making small adjustments each time and closing the door afterward to check the effect. And don’t worry about loosening the screws – the construction is quite sturdy if you proceed carefully 🙂

Are there any tips on how to tell exactly when the depth adjustment is needed? You can mainly tell by sight and feel. If the door wobbles or causes a slight knocking sound against the cabinet when slammed, it's usually due to missing or incorrect depth adjustment.
Before turning the depth adjustment screw repeatedly, you should also check if the door bumpers underneath the door are still intact. This simple component is often overlooked, but it can make a big difference.
Additional to the previous discussion: When adjusting the BILLY doors, I recommend removing the door completely from the unit before making any adjustments and checking the hinges.
Most issues arise because small installation tolerances tend to increase over time. The hinges can loosen or slightly bend.
A precise adjustment requires some finesse. If the door still closes unevenly after all adjustments, it could be due to warped door panels, which can often be compensated for with simple methods (e.g., slight readjustment of the mounting points on the cabinet).
