Hello everyone, I am currently looking into how to readjust the doors of the IKEA Billy bookshelf. Specifically, some of the doors don’t close properly anymore or hang slightly crooked.

I know that the hinges can be adjusted, but what is the best way to proceed to get the doors properly aligned and flush again?

Is there a systematic process or any special tips for situations where, for example, a door has too much gap at the top corner while the bottom fits perfectly? I am working with the original BILLY door set and want to avoid any unnecessary damage.

I would appreciate any helpful feedback!

You need to be aware that BILLY doors are made for the mass market. You shouldn’t expect micrometer-level precision. Adjustment is the first step – but it’s rare that they ever fit perfectly.

If your doors hang slightly crooked, IKEA doesn’t really care as long as they close properly and don’t stick. What I mean is: if you want absolute perfection, consider choosing a different door system.

The mechanism is simple: the hinge at the back has a Phillips screw that allows the door to pivot, and the front screw is for lateral adjustment. You can’t expect more than that.

Is your door hanging unevenly? 1. Loosen the screw at the top hinge. 2. Align the door. 3. Tighten the screw again.

For height adjustment: adjust the screws at the front. Done.

I can explain more clearly how to properly adjust the BILLY doors:

1. First, hang the door on the shelf unit. Usually, the hinges are already pre-installed.
2. To adjust the height, slightly loosen the screws that hold the hinge at the top and bottom, lift or lower the door, then tighten the screws again.
3. For lateral adjustment, there is an adjustment screw on the front hinge that moves the door left or right.
4. The depth (how closely the door fits against the cabinet) is also adjusted using a screw on the hinge.

Common mistakes:
- Not loosening the screws enough, which prevents movement.
- Not supporting the door while tightening the screws – this can cause misalignment.

It’s best to proceed step by step and check after each small adjustment to ensure everything fits properly.

I think adjusting the BILLY doors is really a test of patience 😉 Sometimes you feel like you’ve done everything right, but the door still doesn’t hang perfectly. But hey, with a bit of practice, it gets easier!

My tip: Always work gently, turn the screws slowly, and close the door occasionally – this helps you get a feel for the small movements. And if you notice one corner sticking out more, make sure to adjust that specific side.

And if the doors become too loose: tighten the screws firmly again and start over. That’s always helped me so far 🙂

Hello Onlemi,

to give you the most precise instructions on how to readjust your BILLY doors, I would first like to explain how the hinges work. The so-called cup hinges have three adjustment axes:

1. Height adjustment: For this, you need to loosen the screws that fix the hinge to the shelf. This allows you to move the door up and down to compensate for unevenness in the cabinet carcass.
2. Lateral adjustment: A rotary screw on the front of the hinge moves the door horizontally. This is especially important if the door is positioned too far away from the cabinet in one area.
3. Depth adjustment: Another screw adjusts the pressure or how close the door sits to the frame.

If a door is too far away at the upper corner, you should start with the lateral adjustment on the upper hinge. Then check the height and adjust it by loosening the hinges from the shelf and slightly raising or lowering the door. Proceed gradually in small steps until everything is flush.

Do you perhaps already have a specific problem, such as warped doors or cabinet components that need to be taken into account? That would influence the approach.
