ᐅ BILLY bookshelf doors are sticking – how can I fix this?

Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Billy bookcase from IKEA and after assembling it, I noticed that the doors do not open properly. Specifically, the doors get stuck at one point when opening, although the hinges appear to be installed correctly. The gap between the door and the bookcase is uneven, which seems to be the cause.

I have already tried realigning the doors, but so far without success. It feels as if either the hinges don’t fit perfectly or the wood is warped.

Has anyone had experience with how to correctly adjust the doors so they open and close smoothly? Are there any tips on which screws to tighten or loosen, or special tricks during assembly?

I would really appreciate any helpful advice!

Update from my side:

I checked the shelf with a spirit level; it was indeed slightly tilted. After leveling it with small wooden wedges underneath, the door operates much more smoothly.

I also removed the doors and adjusted the hinges following Tommy38’s instructions—carefully adjusting the screws for both horizontal and vertical alignment. Now the door opens cleanly without any sticking.

Thanks to everyone for the tips! Especially for the step-by-step guide and the note about the uneven floor surface.

The remaining question is: Has anyone had experience with how to prevent this issue from recurring due to loosening screws or minor deformations? Any maintenance or care tips?

Great to hear that it’s working now!

To minimize the need for adjustments, it’s best to tighten the screws firmly but not excessively. Over-tightening can warp the wood or strip the screws.

A drop of medium-strength threadlocker (e.g., blue Loctite) can help prevent loosening if you’re okay with using chemical products.

Also, regularly check if the shelf is still level and, if necessary, insert small shims. Wood expands and contracts with humidity – some movement is normal.

Enjoy your BILLY shelf! 🙂

Chemical agents like those mentioned by Tommy38 can be helpful, but they are not ideal for all materials – especially with inexpensive particleboard furniture, where the wood around the screw can be damaged.

Therefore, I also recommend mechanical solutions: either regularly check and retighten the screws or use oversized screws if the shelf can handle it.

It is important to avoid exerting excessive pressure on the wood from overtightened hinges. Otherwise, it can warp more quickly.

This should always be carefully considered.

Thank you, Natan and Tommy38, your arguments and tips give me a good balance between reliability and material conservation.

I will therefore be careful when retightening and will not use aggressive threadlocker.

In case of recurring issues, I reserve the right to check the screws every 6 months.

I really appreciate getting advice here that is not only practical but also explains the background – thanks to everyone involved! 🙂

Just one final tip:

If a door consistently sticks slightly, a small piece of fine sandpaper or a plane can help to remove pressure marks – but be very careful not to remove too much material.

This usually works for minor contact issues when adjusting the door alone is not enough.
