ᐅ How can you prevent Billy doors from sticking or getting stuck?

YvordeoHello everyone,
I have been having a recurring problem with the doors on my Billy bookcases from IKEA—they either stick or get jammed. This causes them to be difficult to open or even completely blocked. I suspect it might be due to alignment or the material, but I’m not sure.
My question is: How can you prevent Billy doors from sticking or jamming? What tips are there to fix the problem permanently or avoid it altogether? I am especially interested in advice on adjusting the doors, possible causes of sticking, and what to watch out for during installation.
I look forward to your experiences and suggestions!

What tips are there to permanently solve the problem or prevent it from occurring in the first place? The most important thing is to adjust the hinges properly. Usually, the screws are a bit loose or the door isn’t precisely vertical. Often, a small screwdriver is enough to realign the door. Additionally, make sure the shelf is level, which helps prevent warping.

An optimal adjustment process looks like this:
1. First, check if the shelving unit is perfectly level and plumb using a spirit level at several points. Even slight tilts can cause doors to jam.
2. Open the doors and inspect whether the hinges are firmly attached and no screws are loose.
3. Use the adjustment mechanism on the hinges to precisely align the doors horizontally, vertically, and in depth to the millimeter. Often, this is not a one-time adjustment but a process involving small corrections.
4. Check if the doors are rubbing against the top or bottom edges. If so, light sanding or inserting thin felt or rubber pads can help.
5. Keep humidity and temperature as stable as possible because wood swelling promotes jamming.
6. If possible, inspect the door seals to see if they are too thick or damaged.
I’m interested to know: How are your doors installed? Are these furniture doors that move frequently in everyday use, or are they mostly static? Have you ever tried removing the doors completely and rehanging them? This can often give a better overview.
I hope this helps!

If the Billy shelf is not perfectly upright, the doors will become warped over time, causing them to stick. This can be especially important on old wooden floors. I recommend using small shims or furniture wedges.
Additionally, I suggest cleaning and lightly oiling the hinges occasionally, as dirt and rust can also cause the doors to stick.

I had the same issue with sagging Billy doors until I treated the hinges with some WD-40. After that, the doors worked like new again! Just keep at it—small steps often help much more than you think.
Also, I want to add: patience during adjustment is key. Don’t get frustrated right away; it’s worth it. Good luck to everyone trying to fix this too! 🙂
