Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to customize the interior of my IKEA Pax wardrobe myself to make the most of the storage space and create a solution tailored to my needs. I am particularly interested in the options available for designing the interior without being limited to the pre-made IKEA inserts.
Specifically, it would be helpful to know how to arrange shelves, drawers, or clothes rails flexibly, whether it is possible to build additional components yourself, and which materials are suitable for this. What about stability and mounting?
Are there any proven tips or experiences on how to customize the interior of a Pax wardrobe without it becoming unstable or impractical in the end? I look forward to your detailed suggestions and experiences!

It is also important to consider how you plan to use the shelves later on. If you want to securely place heavy boxes, stronger shelves and sturdy brackets are a must. Thinner shelves are sufficient for lighter items.
Make sure to leave enough space between the shelves so that clothes rods or hanging systems can fit comfortably.

Stability and strong fastenings are important to me, and I want to be sure I’m not working with material that’s too thin.Very good. Then I recommend using MDF or multiplex boards at least 18-22 mm (0.7–0.9 inches) thick, as these provide good stability with moderate weight. Additionally, laminate foil or a coating protects against moisture and scratch-prone areas.
Regarding fastenings: The side panels of Pax are made of particleboard with holes arranged in a grid about 3 cm (1.2 inches) apart. Here you can use so-called Minifix fittings or metal screws. When drilling, be careful not to cause cracks. If needed, use pre-drilled guides.
Does your cabinet mainly hold heavy or light items? Are there many clothes hanging rods, or do you plan to use mostly drawers and shelves?

Hey, this topic sounds like a lot of fun – if you approach it the right way. My tips:
- Make a sketch on paper of how everything should look.
- Keep in mind that the closet will need to withstand a lot, especially if heavy coats or shoes are stored inside.
- And very important: take your time during installation; fixing mistakes is more stressful than doing it properly from the start.
Sometimes a bit of creativity is needed, for example, fabric boxes as flexible storage options. They also add some color!

Take your time during installation; fixing mistakes is more stressful than doing it right the first time. Absolutely! And I would add: approach the task calmly, even if a panel is slightly misaligned or a hole doesn’t fit perfectly at times. In the end, the result is what matters – and that makes the cabinet your personal organizer’s dream.Similar topics
