berkut61Hello everyone,
I have an Ikea Pax wardrobe and I’m looking for a sustainable and environmentally friendly way to thoroughly clean the inside without using harsh chemicals. The wardrobe has several shelves, drawers, and metal hanging rods. My main concern is to avoid damaging either the material of the shelves or the finish on the hanging rods by using the wrong cleaners.
Additionally, I would like to use natural remedies or eco-friendly products that are readily available and gentle enough for both wood components and metal, yet still effective against dust, buildup, and light stains. Does anyone have experience, tips, or maybe even step-by-step advice for sustainably maintaining the interior of a Pax wardrobe?
I look forward to your opinions and suggestions!

Hello berkut61,
I can understand your situation well. Sustainability in cleaning furniture, especially Ikea Pax units, is a topic that is often underestimated. Step by step, I would proceed as follows:
- First, remove all shelves and drawers to access every area properly.
- For the interior surfaces, use a damp microfiber or cotton cloth soaked in a solution of warm water with a splash of white vinegar (about 1:10). Vinegar has antibacterial properties, is biodegradable, and does not damage wood surfaces if used in moderation.
- For the metal parts, you can use a cloth with lukewarm soapy water (e.g., neutral soap). This cleans effectively without promoting corrosion.
- Immediately dry everything with a clean, dry cloth to prevent water spots.
It is important not to use aggressive solvents or harsh cleaners, as Ikea often uses coated particle boards which could otherwise be damaged.
What type of surfaces do you have? Are they painted particle boards or laminated? Then we could tailor the cleaning process more specifically.

Hello berkut61,
Your concern is completely justified, especially since Ikea Pax often consists of coated materials that can be damaged by improper cleaning. Essentially, it’s best to use mild cleaning methods without chemical additives. Here are a few basics:
- Use a damp cloth that is not soaking wet.
- For stains, avoid harsh cleaners and instead use a microfiber cloth with warm water.
- If you prefer natural remedies, try baking soda on a damp cloth, which gently removes dirt.
If you are unsure, test the cleaning product on an inconspicuous area first to avoid discoloration or damage. This way, you stay on the safe side.

Hello berkut61,
I would like to add that sustainability in cleaning depends not only on the cleaning solution but also on the method:
- Use reusable cloths whenever possible, not disposable paper towels.
- Be careful not to let excessive moisture penetrate the particleboard, as it can swell and get damaged.
Regarding the cleaning process itself:
1. Remove all movable parts (drawers, shelves) for cleaning.
2. Mix a mild solution: warm water with a few drops of eco-friendly dish soap (without fragrances and phosphates).
3. Use a microfiber cloth that is absorbent but gentle.
4. For metal surfaces, I recommend an old cotton cloth, possibly dampened with some lemon juice, which helps remove limescale and cleans at the same time.
Another tip: ventilate the cabinet well during and after cleaning so everything can dry quickly and mold formation is prevented.
Do you have any issues with odors or possible moisture in your cabinet? That might slightly affect the cleaning method.

Thank you for the answers and the helpful tips!
To add some details: The floors are more like lacquered particle boards, and the metal rods have a matte chrome finish. Odors are not much of an issue, as the cabinet is in a fairly dry room.
So far, I have been concerned about using vinegar on lacquered surfaces—I wasn’t sure if it might cause damage or dull spots over time. Maybe a dishwashing detergent with natural surfactants would be a better choice?
When cleaning, I also want to avoid leaving too much moisture behind because I’m worried about swelling. Do you have any experience with how to apply the right amount?
