Hello everyone, I am considering installing our Ikea PAX wardrobe in the children's room as well, but I am concerned about the safety and child-friendliness of this furniture. My specific question is: How can I make the Ikea PAX child-safe so that the doors do not slam shut dangerously, the wardrobe is tip-resistant, and my children’s curiosity does not lead them to access things they should not touch too quickly? I have already thought about door dampers, anti-tip devices, and lockable handles, but which solutions have proven effective, and how can I implement them in a practical and visually appealing way? I would appreciate any tips and experiences.

My specific question is: How can I make Ikea PAX child-safe so that the doors don’t slam shut dangerously, the wardrobe is stable and won’t tip over, and my children can’t get to things they shouldn’t touch out of their curiosity?A very well-considered concern! To answer your question in detail:
1. Tip-over protection: The most important step is to secure the PAX wardrobe to the wall. Ikea provides appropriate anti-tip devices that are attached both to the wall and the wardrobe frame. This reliably prevents tipping.
2. Door dampers: Special soft-close dampers installed on the doors ensure they close slowly—ideal to avoid typical pinch injuries with small children.
3. Restricted access areas: Child safety locks such as catches can be added to lower drawers or compartments so children can’t access them unchecked.
4. Internal boxes: Lockable boxes allow you to safely store more dangerous items inside.
5. Appearance: Colorful storage bins or child-friendly interior design keep the wardrobe interesting and organized for children without letting them get carried away.
6. Advanced option: For parents seeking more technological solutions, electronic cabinet locks with PIN codes are available.
If you have further questions, I’m happy to help!

Additionally, we use soft-close hinges to prevent the doors from slamming shut.
Lockable boxes for hazardous items, done.

What helped me was securing the PAX unit to the wall using wall anchors. Additionally, we installed soft-close dampers on the doors to reliably prevent finger injuries. For especially curious children, I combine this with simple child safety locks on the handles.
Important: Children learn quickly which things are off-limits, which increases safety. The visual design with colorful boxes also makes the wardrobe more appealing to children and clearly organized. That really helps!

With lockable boxes, you can safely store more dangerous items. I think that’s great too, as it provides not only safety but also organization—a double benefit! Adding a bit of humor to the design helps as well: if the boxes have funny names or motifs, it makes everything more relaxed, and the kids find the cupboard interesting without rummaging through everything. 😉
