Hello everyone, I am planning to customize my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets by painting them to give a personal touch and move away from the standard look. My specific question is: What steps and materials are recommended to paint the Metod fronts and carcasses without causing damage? I have heard that surface preparation and priming are crucial, but what is the best way to proceed exactly? Are there particular paints that work especially well, and what about durability? Additionally, I am interested in whether doors and drawers should be removed before painting and which tools are most suitable. I look forward to your detailed experiences and advice to avoid any beginner mistakes.

I can understand your uncertainty, Eraybo. The challenge with painting Metod is that the surfaces are often melamine-coated, which is really not easy to work with.

Personally, I’ve had great results using a primer specifically designed for melamine-coated surfaces. First, I thoroughly cleaned the fronts (using alcohol or a mild solvent) and then lightly sanded them. It’s important to gently scuff the surface with a sanding pad without sanding too deeply, as the top layer is thin. After that, I applied a special plastic adhesion primer and then worked with a water-based acrylic paint.

If you want, I also recommend painting in a well-ventilated area and allowing the finish to cure over several days. This method worked very well for me, although I did experience some frustration during drying and noticed a few small imperfections at first — but these can be easily fixed later on.

Good luck with your project!
