Hello everyone, I’m considering adapting my IKEA Platsa furniture for my children’s homeschooling and I’m looking for practical tips on the best way to approach this.
Specifically, I want to use the furniture so that the workstations are both functional and space-saving. Additionally, I want to create storage for school supplies to keep everything organized and minimize distractions while the children are studying.
Since Platsa consists of modular cabinets and units, I’m wondering how to best combine or expand them to, for example, create a stable tabletop or integrate flexible partition elements. Ideas on how to include lighting or cable management are also very welcome.
How have you adapted your Platsa furniture for homeschooling, or what would you recommend to turn the individual modules into an ideal learning space?

Could you maybe explain in more detail how you attached the tabletop?Sure, I used simple metal brackets (L-brackets) that are screwed to the back of the cabinets to support the tabletop. This prevents the tabletop from sliding sideways or shifting.
You can also place small non-slip pads between the tabletop and the cabinets to increase grip, especially if there is no wall pressing against the cabinets.
For the LED strips, I recommend those with a self-adhesive backing that can be fixed using 3M tape. Make sure they are dimmable and have a neutral or warm white color temperature, as this is easier on the eyes. Cleaning is easy with a damp cloth since the strips are often made of plastic.
For better clarity, here is a brief guide on how to create an optimal home-schooling workspace using Platsa furniture:
1. Planning:
- Measure the height and width of the cabinets accurately.
- Choose two or more modules of the same height.
2. Worktop:
- Use a worktop at least 2 cm thick (e.g., plywood or lacquered solid wood).
- Attach the worktop with metal L-brackets on the inside of the modules.
- Use non-slip pads or a light clamping solution.
3. Lighting:
- LED strips with detachable clips allow flexible installation.
- Position the lights to avoid casting shadows.
4. Cable management:
- Install cable channels on the back.
- Use Velcro cable ties.
5. Storage:
- Use labeled boxes to keep things organized.
- Plan enough space for books and notebooks.
6. Ergonomics:
- Ensure the seat height is appropriate – adjustable chairs may be added.
Mistakes caused by improper attachment of the worktop are common – avoid loose fixings. Good luck!

I find this topic really fascinating! I’ve also experimented with Platsa and can only encourage you to try out different combinations. The flexibility is enormous.
A little tip: For more individuality, I bought colorful boxes that fit into the compartments – this makes learning more colorful and motivating for the kids!
If you follow the suggestions here, it will turn out really well – have fun crafting and setting up!

However, before purchase/installation, the maximum load capacity of each module should be checked to prevent overloading. That’s an important point, thanks. Does anyone know the approximate load-bearing capacity per module for Platsa? In the product description, I only found that they are intended for clothing and household items, but no specific information on the maximum load in kilograms.
I want to avoid overloading the modules financially or structurally later on, especially if I place a tabletop on them.

Does anyone know the approximate load capacity per module for Platsa?Platsa modules are typically designed to support a load of around 10–15 kg (22–33 lbs) per shelf. The surfaces can generally handle a maximum load of about 20–30 kg (44–66 lbs) if no additional reinforcements are present.
For a sturdy tabletop, it is essential to include extra brackets or other reinforcements to distribute the load evenly. If the weight increases, you might also consider securing the modules together using the supplied connectors to create a clamped assembly.
