Hello everyone, does anyone have experience with the Ikea PLATSA system combined with integrated lighting? I am planning a custom wall unit with PLATSA and want to equip it electrically with a lighting solution. I am especially interested in which light sources work well with the PLATSA concept, how the installation technically works, and whether there are any specific challenges regarding the power supply. Are there any tips for choosing bulbs in terms of brightness and color temperature to create a harmonious effect? I would appreciate detailed experiences or recommendations, as I want to approach this as carefully as possible.

Platsa is perfect for modifications. Ikea’s modular system fits well, and cables are best concealed using cable ducts. A dimmer must be purchased separately, as Ikea only offers basic options.

I completely understand that having consistent lighting is important to you – I feel the same way about furniture. At first, I was really unsure about the installation because I was worried that the cables might be visible or that it would look messy.

The flexible LED strips that NUPIN mentioned are really your best option. I also had some awkward corners with slightly darker shadows at the beginning, but after adjusting the strips, everything was perfectly even.

If it’s alright with you, how does the room look overall? Is there already ceiling lighting, and what kind of atmosphere are you aiming to create? This can sometimes help in choosing the right color temperature.

Dimmer: You can actually use IKEA STRÖMLINJE, but it’s not 100% compatible with PLATSA.

That’s an important tip – thanks! I’ll research how to connect the dimmer externally before the power supply, that sounds technically reasonable.

The room has a rather modern design, with white walls and light wood furniture. The ceiling lighting is dimmed, mostly warm white, but with daylight LEDs for working. I want to design the PLATSA wardrobe system as a combination of functional storage and cozy living room lighting. The color temperature should be warm to neutral and ideally dimmable for different moods.

Are there any recommendations on whether I should definitely prefer IKEA LEDs or rather use independent LED strips that I can cut to size myself?

This is the key point for me: Ikea LEDs offer convenience and easy integration, but they are often limited in flexibility, control, and color options. Independent LED strips are more versatile, but require more technical effort and know-how.

If you are into smart lighting or have specific design requirements, I would recommend independent solutions that you can pair with dimmers, color changing, and smart plugs. For basic functionality and simple installation, Ikea has many advantages.

How important is technical customization for you?

I’ll add a technical assessment: Ikea systems are plug-and-play in terms of installation and safety but offer limited customization. Using your own LED strips often allows for higher brightness, a wider color range, better dimming options, and precise adaptation to the exact dimensions of the PLATSA units.

If you have the budget and enjoy tinkering, I recommend buying conventional 12V LED strips (e.g., with a CRI above 90 and color temperatures between 2700K and 3000K) combined with a suitable power supply and a dimmer or even a small controller. This way, you can create lighting zones that look natural and provide high lumen output.

One important tip: Wiring should be done neatly using cable ducts; cable sleeves or clips help keep everything looking new and safe. Do you already have experience with electrical work, or is this your first time wiring?

I really appreciate how thoroughly you’ve presented this! Lu_bu, I agree with you as well. If you’re comfortable with electrical work, using independent LED strips is not only customizable but also a smart way to avoid boring, standardized lighting.

However, if you have any concerns, IKEA can definitely help, and you can always expand and upgrade later on. DIY is great, but the effort shouldn’t become overwhelming. Have confidence—you can do it!
