Hello everyone,

I am considering buying an IKEA Platsa wardrobe system for our little one's bedroom. It is important to me that the furniture includes some form of child safety features or is at least compatible with secure devices to prevent young children from opening doors or drawers on their own.

Does anyone have experience with whether IKEA Platsa furniture comes with built-in child safety features? Or does IKEA offer suitable additional solutions for this? If not, what options are available to make Platsa safe and child-friendly?

Since I prioritize safe furniture, I would appreciate well-informed opinions, including recommendations on installation or products that have proven effective for this purpose. Thanks in advance!

Hello Selone,

IKEA does not offer built-in special child safety features for the Platsa system. The cabinets themselves do not have integrated mechanisms to prevent children from opening drawers or doors.

However, compatible accessories are available to add safety measures. For example, there are universal child safety locks for cabinet systems that can be fitted on the inside or outside. IKEA also provides furniture anchoring kits to prevent tipping, which is important for homes with children.

My recommendation: check whether you want to retrofit magnetic or clamp locks, which are available at furniture or baby specialty stores. These can prevent unintended openings and are usually inconspicuous.

Additionally, Platsa cabinets should always be secured to the wall to avoid tipping hazards—there are clear instructions for this in the assembly guide provided by IKEA.

If you have further questions about installation or accessories, I am happy to provide more detailed information.

Platsa does not have an integrated child safety lock.

You can retrofit universal child safety locks for this purpose, such as clamp locks or magnetic locks.

Hello Selone,

to elaborate a bit more:

IKEA does not offer specific child safety locks directly for Platsa, which is generally the case for most modular furniture. This is because Platsa has a modular design that you assemble based on your needs. Child safety locks are often available as separate accessories and are not integrated into the furniture itself.

One common solution is using magnetic locks that are installed inside the doors or drawers. These prevent children from opening the cabinets without the matching magnetic key. Some parents also use clamp or latch locks, which can be easily installed without damaging the furniture.

It is also very important to secure the units to the wall with screws to prevent them from tipping over. This is the biggest safety concern with furniture in homes with children.

If you like, I can provide some sources for these products and installation tips.

That is correct. In addition to the options mentioned, I would like to point out that IKEA generally does not include integrated child safety features in modular systems like Platsa.

For child safety locks, the following are mainly recommended:
- Magnetic locks that are installed inside the furniture
- Clamp or latch locks for doors and drawers
- Child safety locks with straps or handle mechanisms

Furthermore, it should be considered that retrofitting these locks can make access to storage more difficult, so the choice of locks should be carefully weighed.

To prevent tipping, wall anchoring is essential, and IKEA includes appropriate mounting kits with their products.

Thanks for the clear points!

I’m especially interested in whether anyone has experience with using magnetic child safety locks specifically for Platsa. Are these really effective and discreet? Or is it better to opt for mechanical solutions like latch locks?

Also: Is it possible to use soft-close drawers with Platsa to prevent slamming? I’ve read that this can also contribute somewhat to child safety.
