kauniklas12 Apr 2018 09:13Hello everyone, I’m considering adapting my IKEA Platsa furniture for my children’s homeschooling and I’m looking for practical tips on the best way to approach this.
Specifically, I want to use the furniture so that the workstations are both functional and space-saving. Additionally, I want to create storage for school supplies to keep everything organized and minimize distractions while the children are studying.
Since Platsa consists of modular cabinets and units, I’m wondering how to best combine or expand them to, for example, create a stable tabletop or integrate flexible partition elements. Ideas on how to include lighting or cable management are also very welcome.
How have you adapted your Platsa furniture for homeschooling, or what would you recommend to turn the individual modules into an ideal learning space?

Hello kauniklas, I find your request very well thought out!
Platsa is really suitable for a flexible homeschooling setup because the modules can be combined individually. For example, I placed two wide cabinets side by side at the same height and laid a tabletop made of a matching wooden board (slightly thicker for stability) between them – this creates a sturdy workspace.
It is important to measure the height of the cabinets precisely so that the table has a comfortable working height. For lighting, you can install LED strips under the upper cabinets that provide glare-free light onto the tabletop.
For cable management, I recommend using cable ducts or Velcro straps that you can attach to the back of the cabinets. This way, chargers, power supplies, and similar items stay nicely hidden, making the area look tidier.
If you like, I can also share some links to suitable lighting options.

I would like to add: When assembling, make sure the tabletop is not only load-bearing but also securely fastened. Use wood clamps or metal brackets to fix Ikea panels so nothing wobbles.
For lighting, dimmable LED strips are recommended, allowing you to adjust the brightness – this reduces eye strain during longer study sessions. Additionally, it is important to store work materials in labeled boxes or baskets to maintain organization and teach children responsibility.

Efficient use of the Platsa modules requires careful planning of the room layout. For home schooling, the following adjustments are recommended:
- Use of two or more Platsa base cabinets at the same height
- Integration of a sturdy, painted or sealed tabletop between them
- Securing with bracket supports or screws to stabilize the work surface
- Installation of cable channels or Velcro straps to organize power cords and chargers
- Placement of storage boxes with clear labels for organization
- Attachment of frameless LED light profiles for flexible, glare-free lighting
However, before purchase or installation, the maximum load capacity of each module should be checked to prevent overloading. Also consider ergonomic factors such as chair height and desk height adjusted to the children’s sizes.

Could you please explain a bit more how you secured the countertop? I’m asking because I’m concerned it might shift if it’s not directly against the wall.
And regarding the LED strips: are there specific products you would recommend, especially in terms of easy installation on furniture? Ideally, it should be something that can be installed without much effort and is easy to clean afterwards.
