Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to buy some IKEA Platsa furniture, mainly cabinets with drawers. One thing that interests me a lot and also makes me a bit uncertain is the stability of the existing drawer slides.

I would specifically like to know: Are there drawer slides for IKEA Platsa furniture that are considered particularly sturdy? Or are the standard slides rather less durable and prone to wear?

I am especially looking for experiences or recommendations from people who have used Platsa drawers over a longer period in everyday life, especially with heavier contents such as books or dishes.

Any experiences, tips for reinforcement, or alternative solutions would also be very welcome.

Thanks in advance!

Hello Vasco,

I completely understand how important this question is for you. About a year ago, I bought PLATSA drawers myself and mainly use them for clothes and household items.

Personally, I find the drawer slides to be a reasonable compromise for the price, but you need to be careful with heavy loads like books or dishes. After some use, the drawers have become a bit harder to open, and with some of them, the slides no longer felt as secure.

I am now considering replacing the standard slides with other, more durable models but haven’t tried this yet. It would be interesting to hear from anyone with experience in this.

The standard drawer slides used in PLATSA are designed for normal loads but are not suitable for very heavy items. If you want to store heavy objects, I recommend using triple-extension slides with full extension and metal ball bearings.

Hello Vasco,

I had similar thoughts. From my experience, the PLATSA drawer slides are fine for normal household use. I regularly fill my drawers with kitchen utensils, so sometimes heavier items than clothing. So far, no problems, but I’m also not the type to stuff the cabinets full of extremely heavy things.

If the slides don’t seem sturdy enough for you, IKEA employees sometimes offer alternative slide systems for the same drawer size—such as more robust metal runners—but this is not officially advertised.

Some users also report installing aftermarket upgrades themselves when using the furniture for a home office.

I haven’t made any upgrades myself yet, but I would consider it if it really becomes necessary.

Hey Vasco,

briefly and to the point: The PLATSA drawer slides aren’t made to last forever, but they’re perfectly fine for normal use. Of course, if you fill them with lead weights, nobody can handle that 😂

Jokes aside, if you want more stability, you can buy high-quality drawer slides from the hardware store and install them yourself. By the way, it’s not that difficult—I did it at home, and now they operate like a dream.

That also gives the whole thing a really professional touch.

From a technical perspective, it can be noted that the IKEA PLATSA drawer slides are mostly made of plastic and metal components with a simple ball bearing system. They are sufficient for moderate loads of up to approximately 15-20 kg (33-44 lbs).

For heavier loads, I recommend using external, higher-quality drawer slides, such as full-extension slides with metal ball cages available from specialized suppliers.

In terms of long-term durability, smooth operation, and load capacity, these options are significantly superior and can be relatively easily retrofitted if the PLATSA furniture structurally allows for it.

Since IKEA does not officially offer specially reinforced slides for PLATSA, this remains the practical solution for users with higher demands.
