Good evening everyone

I’m starting a small collection thread here for photos and progress updates on our second building project.
We’ve already moved to the Palatinate region to be closer to the construction site. Now we’re watching eagerly and happily as our (hopefully final) dream home takes shape near family.

One big challenge still ahead of us is the facade design. I really love the Nordic style with brickwork and mullioned windows. That won’t be possible here for two reasons: firstly, no one here can do bricklaying, and secondly, it would stand out too much. We will be going with a rendered facade. How to design the colors of the facade and windows to still create some country house / cottage charm is currently still a work in progress mentally.

Otherwise, I’m sharing our plans here and how it will eventually be built.
The support pillar marked near the kitchen island could be removed for a small extra cost, so that will be gone.

The room for “garden equipment” under the garage will get a partition wall for structural reasons.
It won’t be fully finished living space like in the house, but underfloor heating will be installed, along with a lockable door and a window. It’s meant to store garden tools but also some of the building services equipment, since the utility room (HAR) is quite small, and maybe be used as a party room.

We had three construction companies in the final selection. In the end, we chose the “doer” – a builder recommended to us here by friends and family. No website, no smartphone, but he is on site every day himself working in overalls. He has a very good reputation in this area and now rarely builds single-family homes. We were a bit lucky through personal connections and a very friendly initial phone call to get our foot in the door. So far we are very satisfied with this choice.

In the first picture, it looks like someone messed up the height at the stairs?! The first step seems noticeably too low?
I thought that at first too. But I believe it’s because there will only be a thin floor build-up on the screed, while on the steps themselves, thick wooden beams will still be added. I assume that will make it work out. At least I hope so. =)
We just received this picture recently. They are beautiful – I’m really looking forward to it. 😱

Yes, that could work 😉, these are always abstractions you need to keep in mind when dealing with stairs.

Construction site with installed floor tiles, building materials, and construction tools

Progress is moving quickly – the front doors have been installed today! Some rooms have been painted, and work on the bathrooms continues. Also, the flooring installation has started.
We now have the following "dilemma" – or rather, we are still undecided on how to handle this.
This is the upstairs hallway. To the right, there will be this mosaic tile as a "tile carpet," surrounded by matching neutral gray tiles as a border.
To the left (bottom) is the staircase with the wooden flooring shown earlier. To the left (top), the parquet flooring will meet the tile.
We are now considering how and where to make the transition between these materials.
When we initially planned this, we didn’t take into account that the end of the staircase and the upper wall are not aligned. Originally, a rectangular carpet-like arrangement was intended.

If I keep the tile carpet rectangular so that it ends before the stairs, then the parquet would run around the corner, which would look quite odd. If I end the parquet beside the stairs, then the tile carpet would wrap around the corner.
I don’t want to break the pattern — so, as shown in the photo, that is not an option. One possibility is to place the neutral tile border double width in some spots. Or to leave out the neutral tile at the staircase transition — but that might also look strange.
Do you have any ideas?

Is it possible for the coverings to meet diagonally in the corner?

I would like to see a photo of THIS room afterwards, please. The tile choice is quite extravagant. I’m very curious!

With tiles of this size, square-shaped and with the “border” around them, I would try to start from the center of the room to see if it can be centered. Some loss at the edges would be less important.

What exactly do you mean? Or which corner are you referring to?

We will post pictures—we’re really excited too. This is just in the house entrance. We stepped a bit out of our comfort zone there. =)

One new insight is just how far the staircase extends into the room.
I had previously assumed the corner on the right would be narrower than the staircase. If I end the neutral tile in front of the stairs, that leaves a free strip about 20cm (8 inches) wide there.
If I continue it as in the photo, the patterned tile would end exactly at the stairs. That could work—it fits reasonably well; we just tried it. But then the border would have that gap.
Or we lay the border all around it, something like this:

But then I think the pattern might cause problems. My plan was more to cut the solid-color tiles to fit, not the mosaic.

What I would find absolutely brilliant would be to leave out the solid-color tile completely and frame the mosaic carpet with a row of parquet flooring. But I don’t even know if that’s possible, how complex it would be, and I’m not brave enough to ask about it at this stage. XD
