I often hear that homeowners place a high value on a straight staircase. My husband also initially insisted on a straight staircase. But why exactly? I don’t understand it at all. What is the advantage? I actually find curved lines and arches much more attractive. Can someone please explain this to me?

Personally, I also prefer the straight staircase because, compared to others, it offers practical advantages. If you don’t have a basement entrance right below, the space under a straight staircase can be used much more efficiently than under a curved one. Besides that, I simply like the look of an open straight staircase better than others. But, as is often the case, it definitely comes down to personal taste.

It's easier to carry Ikea packages up a straight staircase. When you're older, a stairlift is more affordable.
No, seriously. I am also critical of the space usage of a straight staircase compared to a spiral or angled version. Both can look nice, though.

From my point of view, it feels easier to walk on. Some might consider that insignificant, but I enjoy it every time :-).

You mean like in Southern US-style villas or industrialists’ mansions...? Sure, that has an impact. It’s just not really suitable for a single-family house.

😀 Seriously? Do you have trouble making the turn when cornering or what?

Oh yes, why not? It depends a bit on the size. I enjoy our curved staircase every day. :p

Hello kaho674,
I have designed, built, sold, or installed several thousand staircases.

Whether the staircase has a straight or curved flight does not affect how comfortable it is to use. What matters is that the rise and tread dimensions are calculated correctly.

Everything else is a matter of personal preference.
