Good evening everyone

I’m starting a small collection thread here for photos and progress updates on our second building project.
We’ve already moved to the Palatinate region to be closer to the construction site. Now we’re watching eagerly and happily as our (hopefully final) dream home takes shape near family.

One big challenge still ahead of us is the facade design. I really love the Nordic style with brickwork and mullioned windows. That won’t be possible here for two reasons: firstly, no one here can do bricklaying, and secondly, it would stand out too much. We will be going with a rendered facade. How to design the colors of the facade and windows to still create some country house / cottage charm is currently still a work in progress mentally.

Otherwise, I’m sharing our plans here and how it will eventually be built.
The support pillar marked near the kitchen island could be removed for a small extra cost, so that will be gone.

The room for “garden equipment” under the garage will get a partition wall for structural reasons.
It won’t be fully finished living space like in the house, but underfloor heating will be installed, along with a lockable door and a window. It’s meant to store garden tools but also some of the building services equipment, since the utility room (HAR) is quite small, and maybe be used as a party room.

We had three construction companies in the final selection. In the end, we chose the “doer” – a builder recommended to us here by friends and family. No website, no smartphone, but he is on site every day himself working in overalls. He has a very good reputation in this area and now rarely builds single-family homes. We were a bit lucky through personal connections and a very friendly initial phone call to get our foot in the door. So far we are very satisfied with this choice.

Photos taken from the two lower corners of the plot looking inward would help clarify the situation.

What will happen with the pile of earth?

Maybe in a second phase. At the moment, the money is not there. I’m also not sure if there’s enough space for it. The plot slopes downward at the back. At the wider part, it’s about 8–9 meters (26–30 feet) deep; at the narrower part, only around 6–7 meters (20–23 feet), where the hillside is cut back.

With 8 to 9 meters (26–30 feet), you still have room for two nice terraces of about 3 meters (10 feet) each, if you also need space for the embankment.

I somehow have little imagination for where those should go, for example on the sketch? Could you mark how you mean it?
But I also wouldn’t know where we would get the money for the earthworks. I’d rather invest first in the essentials. Main terrace at the house, driveway, access path, fencing. If we manage that somehow and then spread grass seed over the rest, I’ll be satisfied for now. 🙂

But I also don’t know where we would get the money to cover the earthworks. I’d rather invest in the essentials first: main terrace at the house, driveway, access path, enclosure. If we can manage that somehow and have spread grass seed over the rest, I’ll be happy for now. 🙂

For a robotic lawn mower, the slopes are probably too steep. You should shape them somehow, if necessary using inexpensive retaining blocks, so nothing becomes overgrown.

Right now, I can’t get there for photos without rubber boots. There is already a sloped bank there, and it’s muddy outside.
But you probably wouldn’t see much anyway, because if I stand at the corner of the plot and take pictures looking inward, you’d likely only see soil from the slope.

The pile of soil will probably be spread out. There is still quite a bit of open space around the house. I think it will be used to fill around the house.

I would approach it something like this. The terrace (seating area) could possibly be placed on the other side or somewhere in the middle. The slope could then be designed as a rock garden or with small planted terraces. The stairs could be straight or gently curved, depending on the circumstances. It could also be a project for the future.
