Good evening everyone

I’m starting a small collection thread here for photos and progress updates on our second building project.
We’ve already moved to the Palatinate region to be closer to the construction site. Now we’re watching eagerly and happily as our (hopefully final) dream home takes shape near family.

One big challenge still ahead of us is the facade design. I really love the Nordic style with brickwork and mullioned windows. That won’t be possible here for two reasons: firstly, no one here can do bricklaying, and secondly, it would stand out too much. We will be going with a rendered facade. How to design the colors of the facade and windows to still create some country house / cottage charm is currently still a work in progress mentally.

Otherwise, I’m sharing our plans here and how it will eventually be built.
The support pillar marked near the kitchen island could be removed for a small extra cost, so that will be gone.

The room for “garden equipment” under the garage will get a partition wall for structural reasons.
It won’t be fully finished living space like in the house, but underfloor heating will be installed, along with a lockable door and a window. It’s meant to store garden tools but also some of the building services equipment, since the utility room (HAR) is quite small, and maybe be used as a party room.

We had three construction companies in the final selection. In the end, we chose the “doer” – a builder recommended to us here by friends and family. No website, no smartphone, but he is on site every day himself working in overalls. He has a very good reputation in this area and now rarely builds single-family homes. We were a bit lucky through personal connections and a very friendly initial phone call to get our foot in the door. So far we are very satisfied with this choice.

Please make sure your terrace is at least 5-6 meters (16-20 feet) deep; otherwise, it can feel cramped over time.
It’s a shame when a large part of an expensively purchased plot is taken up by a poorly usable slope.

I believe our expensively purchased plot was still cheaper than most that are half the size, so I’m not worried about it.
Our old house had a terrace 4.5 meters (15 feet) deep, which I found comfortable. Initially, I planned something bigger here, but then I ended up with 70 m² (750 sq ft), which felt too large for me. After scaling back, our current design sketch shows about 45 m² (485 sq ft).
I’ll request some price quotes and then decide how to proceed.

Don’t let anyone convince you to build a huge terrace. You can simply place the beer benches on the grass during gatherings. I also see little need for a second seating area here. Maybe a children's playhouse on stilts; you can easily build one yourself using your left and right hand.

I think I would build a small seating area into the slope. Revisit the terrace concept by shaping 2 or 3 terraces and design a small seating or lounging corner on one of them. Plant flowers all around.

Maybe in a second step. At the moment, the budget doesn’t allow for it. I’m also not sure if there is enough space. The land slopes down at the back. At the wider section, it’s about 8-9 meters (26-30 feet) deep, and at the narrower part only about 6-7 meters (20-23 feet), where the slope is cut back.

For easier understanding, I created a drawing in MS Paint. 🙂
The brown shaded area behind the house has already been temporarily leveled by the builder.

I am assuming that your terrace faces southwest, right? There is still quite a bit of space below the terrace, so it should be designed in a usable way.
