Good evening everyone
I’m starting a small collection thread here for photos and progress updates on our second building project.
We’ve already moved to the Palatinate region to be closer to the construction site. Now we’re watching eagerly and happily as our (hopefully final) dream home takes shape near family.
One big challenge still ahead of us is the facade design. I really love the Nordic style with brickwork and mullioned windows. That won’t be possible here for two reasons: firstly, no one here can do bricklaying, and secondly, it would stand out too much. We will be going with a rendered facade. How to design the colors of the facade and windows to still create some country house / cottage charm is currently still a work in progress mentally.
Otherwise, I’m sharing our plans here and how it will eventually be built.
The support pillar marked near the kitchen island could be removed for a small extra cost, so that will be gone.
The room for “garden equipment” under the garage will get a partition wall for structural reasons.
It won’t be fully finished living space like in the house, but underfloor heating will be installed, along with a lockable door and a window. It’s meant to store garden tools but also some of the building services equipment, since the utility room (HAR) is quite small, and maybe be used as a party room.
We had three construction companies in the final selection. In the end, we chose the “doer” – a builder recommended to us here by friends and family. No website, no smartphone, but he is on site every day himself working in overalls. He has a very good reputation in this area and now rarely builds single-family homes. We were a bit lucky through personal connections and a very friendly initial phone call to get our foot in the door. So far we are very satisfied with this choice.

I would be happy if anyone could share nice examples of wood-effect tiles used in living spaces. Check out https://www.hausbau-forum.de/threads/bau-eines-144-qm-bungalows-in-fichtenwalde-naehe-potsdam.39228/page-178#post-593201 – honestly, it’s probably just a matter of personal preference that I’m not keen on this “material combination.”

The question about flooring (in general, not just which type for which room) is driving me crazy. Same here. Especially since this topic came up unexpectedly for us, but also because it’s not just a matter of price and taste, it’s also about maintenance. As a lazy person, I really don’t feel like regularly oiling hardwood floors. How often this actually needs to be done is still a big mystery to me. Manufacturers recommend doing it annually, but it seems almost no one actually follows that schedule...

I hope that in the future this task will be reliably handled by a vacuum and mop robot ;-) The Heinzelmann, unforgettable original piece, both ingenious and flawed ...

I think laminate and vinyl floors are being quite unfairly criticized here... In our current apartment, we've had laminate flooring for 11 years (we live on the ground floor of a house), including the entrance area. We walk in with outdoor shoes on, and guests never have to take their shoes off. The floor still looks like it did on day one, and I still really like it!
In our future house, we've chosen Modular One. We have about 25 different floor samples here: laminate, vinyl, luxury vinyl tile, hardwood. The floor feels good underfoot, it has the Blue Angel certification, and—an important factor for me—the decor color matches perfectly. For those who prefer black, white, and gray as a neutral base, choosing the right wood tone might not be so difficult, but it is for us. We don’t have white furniture, walls, or doors. Instead, we have lots of wood tones, bold tiles, and even bolder kitchen cabinets, so we really appreciate the variety of decor options available with luxury vinyl flooring, even if the patterns are just printed. But before I crawl around on the floor or lick it 🙂 the look is definitely my first priority.
That’s why, in our case, it’s luxury vinyl flooring. Then unfortunately your recommendation is off the table... Did you not read all the threads about Modular One first?
We have it in the basement guest room and gym. I'll repeat myself: a case of “one size does not fit all.” Visually, the whitewashed look reflects daylight so strangely that in some areas it looks brown (okay, this might just be with that color). I find it quite sensitive for a vinyl floor and would never install it on the ground floor.
We have hardwood in the entire upper floor. I treated it with oil once. For three years now, we haven’t done anything because the dealer drilled this into our heads: less is more. Please don’t mop it all the time, even if your mother-in-law says otherwise. Eventually, I’ll treat it again, but that can wait. It’s very easy to maintain. It’s nothing like the hardwood floors of the past.
