ᐅ Do clip systems from other shelving units also work with KALLAX?

lamuseHello everyone,
I am currently looking into whether clip systems originally designed for other shelving units also work with IKEA KALLAX shelving systems. Specifically, I am interested in whether the connection points, brackets, and fasteners are compatible, or if there are mechanical or structural differences that would prevent or complicate the use of third-party clip systems.
I have noticed that there are various clip systems available on the market with different designs and fastening methods, but not all manufacturers explicitly state compatibility with KALLAX.
Perhaps someone here has practical experience or knows technical details about whether clips for EXPEDIT or other similar shelves can be easily used with KALLAX?
This would be very helpful, as I am considering equipping my shelving unit with additional hanging elements without relying solely on IKEA’s own accessories.
Thanks in advance for your input!

The short answer upfront: Clip systems from other shelving units rarely fit KALLAX shelves exactly as they are.
In my experience, KALLAX uses a different board thickness and a specific grid dimension, which makes compatibility difficult. Clips designed for shelves with thicker sides or different hole spacings usually don’t fit without further modifications.
Therefore, I would recommend carefully comparing the measurements before purchasing and, ideally, doing a small test assembly. Some suppliers offer universal clip systems, but with KALLAX, it’s especially important to pay close attention to the dimensions; otherwise, the result may be unstable or not work properly at all.

That KALLAX has a different panel thickness and a specific grid measurementThat’s true, some time ago I tried to use clips from a cheaper manufacturer made for EXPEDIT on my KALLAX. The clips were too deep and the contact surfaces didn’t fit well because KALLAX has both thinner back panels and different side panel thicknesses.
A tip from me: IKEA usually uses panels with a thickness of 15 mm (0.6 inches) for KALLAX sides, while EXPEDIT panels are more often 18 mm (0.7 inches). This makes a difference in the clamping force of the clips.
Also, pay attention to the fastening method: some clips press in, others are screwed or glued. KALLAX often features reinforced edges that are not compatible with mechanical clips.
If you want to repurpose the shelf, check if your clip system has flexible parts that can adjust. Otherwise, it’s better to use the appropriate original accessories.
Interesting question! I looked into KALLAX and alternative clip systems in detail some time ago, especially because I wanted to install some modular components that are not from IKEA.
First, a few technical details: KALLAX typically uses 15 mm (0.6 inch) MDF panels, and the dimensions of the edges and hole spacing are strictly standardized—at least for the official IKEA accessories.
In contrast, many other shelving systems—such as EXPEDIT, Billy, or modular suppliers like String—often use panel thicknesses of 16–18 mm (0.6–0.7 inch) or even more. This means that clip systems designed around screws or slot clamps either fit too loosely or cannot be properly secured.
Another challenge: KALLAX shelves often have a back panel only 3–4 mm (0.1–0.2 inch) thick, usually rabbeted, which makes it difficult to attach pressure clips that rely on back panel fixing points.
What can work, however, are clips with additional rubber buffers or adjustable clamps that can be fine-tuned. Even then, I only had success after retrofitting the clips with felt or rubber strips to prevent movement or pressure points.
It would be interesting to know if you, @lamuse, have a specific clip system in mind. Then we could look more closely at whether it can be modified or adapted.
Especially for long-term use, the impact on stability should not be underestimated. If a clip system doesn’t fit perfectly, weighted hanging elements can shift over time or damage the shelving.

I was thinking of so-called "universal clips," which are often offered in the DIY sector, for example, clips made of spring steel with adjustable clamping surfaces designed for various material thicknesses. These clips are recommended, among other things, for EXPEDIT and also for wood-like construction panels – but they are rarely explicitly listed for KALLAX.
I have also looked into two different models: on one hand, clip systems for shelves with 15–18 mm (0.6–0.7 inches) material thickness that clamp purely mechanically; on the other hand, systems with screw fastenings and small dovetail groove fittings.
I am curious whether these different attachment types could possibly be adapted or installed on KALLAX, even if they aren’t officially made for it at first glance.
Of course, I don’t want to risk any stability issues or visible damage.
Has anyone here tried such universal clips on KALLAX? Or does anyone know details about KALLAX’s mounting dimensions that could be compared with other clip systems? Thanks!
