ᐅ My KALLAX unit is unintentionally sliding on the laminate floor – how can I stop it?

gersondaHello everyone,
I have an issue with my IKEA KALLAX shelving unit, which is placed on a laminate floor. Unfortunately, I noticed that the unit, mounted on casters, keeps moving unintentionally whenever I lightly bump into it or sometimes due to vibrations in the room – this is not only annoying but also a safety risk, especially since I store heavy items there.
My question is: How can I effectively stop or secure the KALLAX unit on casters so that it no longer rolls uncontrollably on the laminate floor? Are there specific brake mechanisms or clever DIY solutions that work reliably?
I would really appreciate any tips and experiences!

The issue with KALLAX units on casters is that these casters often do not have an integrated lock, which can cause unintended rolling on smooth floors like laminate.
First, you should check if the casters are interchangeable, as IKEA uses standard fittings on some models, so you might be able to replace them with casters that have a locking mechanism. There are two types of locking mechanisms to consider: wheel locks that block the wheel from turning, and dual locks that also stop the swivel function.
Alternatively, I personally recommend placing a mat underneath the casters, such as rubber non-slip mats, which help prevent sliding. These mats are available in small pieces, are easy to position, and protect laminate floors from damage.
It is also important to consider the weight of the items stored, as the heavier the unit, the more pressure is placed on the casters, which can either encourage or prevent unwanted movement. How heavily loaded is the unit? Do you use the casters regularly for mobility, or do you want it to stay in place?

I wasn’t aware there was no locking brake, but that explains why it rolls away easily.
What types of casters or brakes would you recommend that I could install easily without modifying the existing structure? And how exactly do these anti-slip mats work – do you simply place them under the casters, or are they too thin for that? Thanks!
I would recommend casters with an integrated locking brake, which can replace your original wheels. Make sure to use the same mounting type to ensure an easy swap.
Alternatively, sturdy non-slip mats that can be cut to size and placed under the cabinet also work well—they provide good grip on the floor. It is important that these mats do not slip but still allow for slight movement if you want to move the shelf occasionally.
Another option is using wedges or stoppers that you can clamp under one side to block movement in one direction.
