Hello everyone,

I have a somewhat specific request and hope there are people here with experience: Does anyone have replacement wheels or compatible casters for older KALLAX models from IKEA?

Specifically, I’m looking for the wheels attached to the bottom of the older KALLAX shelves, which unfortunately are no longer available from IKEA. The standard wheels for newer models do not fit without significant modifications, and I want to make the shelves mobile while keeping them as close to the original design and as stable as possible.

Has anyone found a source, alternative, or perhaps their own solution that works with little effort and can support the weight of fully loaded shelves? I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Hello Dapu1,

I had the same problem with my older KALLAX shelf. Unfortunately, the original replacement casters are no longer available from IKEA. My solution was to order industrial caster wheels online that had a similar hole pattern and adequate load capacity. However, I had to make small wooden adapters to make them compatible.

If you like, I can provide the measurements and suppliers, and give a detailed description of how I installed the wheels.

It’s not 100% original but very stable and functional. 🙂

Hi Dapu1 :-)

I really like that you're looking for replacement casters for the older KALLAX models – I recently checked myself to find something cool because my KALLAX also lost some wheels.

Unfortunately, these are no longer the simple IKEA-style caster wheels from today. But check out heavy-duty casters at hardware stores or DIY centers! You can find some great options that are usually noise-free and very durable.

Sure, the look isn't quite typical IKEA, but they are definitely practical. And maybe you can disguise them nicely with a small DIY kit? Sometimes the charm is in the handmade solution 😉

Hello everyone 🙂

What Dapu1 is mentioning is really part of IKEA history when you want to make the older KALLAX models mobile again.

I once bought replacement casters from a third-party seller on Amazon that were supposed to be compatible according to the description. Installing them was a bit tricky because the mounting points didn’t match exactly, but with a bit of DIY work it worked out well.

My advice: better to choose sturdier casters that don’t jam easily, otherwise you’ll get frustrated every time you rearrange. 🙂

In short:

Unfortunately, older KALLAX models have different panel thicknesses and mounting hole dimensions for the casters. Therefore, new casters do not fit directly.

Replacement is only possible using adapter plates or wooden strips.

Alternatively, look for casters with the same hole spacing.

According to my research, original replacement casters for the older KALLAX models are no longer available. The newer KALLAX casters differ significantly in mounting thread and dimensions.

The following options seem realistic:

1. Industrial casters with a similar screw diameter, mounted using an adapter plate
2. Custom-made mounting systems, for example using wooden strips and screws
3. Using furniture casters from a hardware store, with the attachment adapted to the shelving unit

Be careful with load capacity: KALLAX shelves can become very heavy, especially when fully loaded. The casters should support at least 50 kg (110 lbs) per caster.

In this regard, products from brands like TENTE are recommended, as they provide reliable load capacity information.
