ᐅ Are there IKEA PLATSA shelves available with an open design?

I’m interested in knowing whether the IKEA Platsa shelves are available in an open design. By that, I mean shelving systems that are not fully enclosed—no doors and no closed fronts—but rather open compartments or shelves that allow space for decoration, books, or other items. I find the PLATSA series quite flexible overall, but the catalog mostly shows versions with doors or with boxes inside. Has anyone had experience with this or can confirm if the shelves can be purchased fully open, or if you generally have to modify them yourself to have an open design?

For clarification: Platsa is primarily a closed storage system with modular flexibility. There are no regular open shelves included in this series. During planning, the modules are selected with doors, drawers, or box fronts to create a closed appearance that both enhances aesthetics and protects the contents. Open-style versions are possible as a DIY solution by removing doors and potentially the back panels. Limitation: Stability and structural load capacity may be affected because the front can partially serve as a load-bearing element. This must be taken into account.

I once assembled a PLATSA shelving unit without doors. You can simply leave the doors off, and the shelf remains open. IKEA also delivers the individual modules without door installation. However, an open shelving unit is usually understood to be constructed differently, for example without a back panel.

I think the PLATSA shelves are kind of semi-open if you leave out the doors. IKEA designed them mainly for closed storage. If you want a completely open look, you might run into issues with the back panel, which is more of a stabilizer for the Platsa units. Of course, you can experiment – but then it becomes more of a DIY project. Still, I believe a somewhat open structure fits well in modern spaces when you customize the modules individually.

Thank you for this assessment. It suggests that there is some flexibility, but an official open version does not exist. I am also curious whether leaving out the doors significantly affects the stability. Has anyone tested this from their own experience?

The doors in PLATSA are not primarily designed to provide stability; this function is mainly handled by the side panels and back panels. However, if you choose to omit the doors, you should definitely install the back panel, as it ensures lateral and cross-bracing. Without the back panel, stability is noticeably compromised. In fact, the system is designed to stand even without doors, but being completely open without a back panel becomes critical.

Thank you for the many helpful comments in this thread! To summarize, I now understand that IKEA does not offer dedicated PLATSA shelves with a fully open design, without doors or back panels. The officially available modules are designed as closed cabinets. However, by removing the doors while keeping the back panels, you can create fairly open shelves. This does not significantly affect stability, which is important. For completely open versions, additional craftsmanship is required, or a combination with other shelving systems to achieve the desired open look. I will take a closer look at this in the IKEA store and try whether I can simply remove the doors. Thanks again!
