Hello everyone,
I recently got an IKEA Metod kitchen with wooden countertops and am wondering how to care for them best to maintain both their appearance and durability over time. I am especially interested in suitable cleaning products that can be used safely, as well as tips to prevent scratches, water stains, or discoloration.
It would also be great to know if there are specific maintenance routines that should be applied regularly, or if the care can be kept minimal.
I don’t want to make any mistakes since wood is quite sensitive, and unfortunately, IKEA only provides rather general guidance in the manual. Thanks in advance for your experiences and advice!

In general, you should avoid exposing the surface to excessive moisture, but I’m always curious about the exact type of wood IKEA Metod uses.
Are they untreated solid wood panels, oiled, or lacquered surfaces? This makes a significant difference in how you maintain them.
Especially with oiled wood countertops, it’s important to reapply oil regularly to prevent the wood from drying out. However, clear guidelines are often missing. Sources of information and experiences from others would be helpful, as many recommendations are based on woodworking standards rather than just common home remedies.

Here is the recommended maintenance procedure:
- Cleaning: Always use a damp, but not too wet cloth. Avoid harsh cleaning agents that can damage the oil layer. Mild dish soap and water are generally sufficient.
- Scratches: Dried-in scratches can be gently sanded with fine sandpaper (grit 240 or finer), then reapply oil to the treated surface.
- Oiling: Depending on use, re-oiling with a special wood oil (such as linseed oil or products specifically made for kitchen countertops) is recommended every 6–12 months. It’s important that the surface is completely dry and clean before oiling.
- Water stains: These usually occur when liquids remain standing for a long time. Therefore, wipe spills immediately with a cloth.
It is important not to let the wood dry out, as this can cause cracking.
How often do you use your countertop in daily life? That can affect how intensive the maintenance needs to be.

Sometimes water or tomato sauce spills on it, and I’m not always sure whether I should just wipe it off immediately or if letting it sit for a bit might cause damage.
What do you think about applying a protective finish? I’ve read that some people do this, especially in kitchens with heavy use. Unfortunately, I’m not sure if that would affect the wood’s appearance or feel.
Great topic! I love my wooden kitchen and can only say:
- Wipe up any spills immediately! This helps keep the wood in good condition for a long time.
- I also use microfiber cloths, which are even gentler.
- Every now and then, I re-oil the wood (about every 9 months).
And don’t worry about scratches – wood is a living material, and small signs of use add to its charm! 🙂
Just make the best of it, best wishes!
