Hello everyone, I recently installed an Ikea Metod drawer system and am now considering how to upgrade the drawers to soft-close. The Metod cabinets usually come with standard runners that neither cushion nor close quietly. My idea is to either replace the existing full-extension runners with soft-close versions or add soft-close dampers as an upgrade. Has anyone had experience with this? I’m especially interested in options that can be done with minimal effort, like whether you simply swap parts or need additional components that are compatible with Ikea Metod. It would also be helpful to know if Ikea offers any soft-close solutions themselves or if there are recommended third-party products. I appreciate any information, including tips on installation and potential pitfalls!

Good morning, Usus35!

I can give you a brief tutorial on how to convert your Ikea Metod drawer system to soft-close. Usually, there are two options:

- Completely replacing the old drawer slides with soft-close slides from Ikea’s range or other compatible manufacturers.
- Retrofitting soft-close kits that can simply be mounted on existing metal or wooden rails.

Ikea actually offers its own soft-close hinges for the Metod doors, but for the drawers, soft-close slides are available as replacement parts. This is usually the cleanest solution, as the mechanism is perfectly matched to the system.

If you want to use additional dampers, you need to make sure they are compatible with the slides and that there is enough space inside the cabinet. Some additional dampers are more suitable for wooden drawers rather than full-extension metal slides.

Tips:
- Pay close attention to the length of the slide and its load capacity when purchasing.
- Check whether the screw holes in your existing furniture system are the same as Ikea’s (usually they are).
- Before installation, empty the drawers completely and slide them in to check if the rails are undamaged.

If you want, I can provide some sources and item numbers.

Best regards, klo40

Hey, I really like how detailed you are!

A while ago, I replaced my standard drawer slides with Ikea’s soft-close ones, and I have to say: it’s definitely worth it. The gentle closing feels more premium, and you don’t hear the loud slamming anymore.

A quick tip: When assembling, I initially installed them the wrong way around, which caused the soft-close mechanism not to work properly. So be sure to follow the instructions carefully and pay attention to how the mechanism functions.

Also, there are third-party options that offer cheaper and sometimes better soft-close drawer slides, but I preferred Ikea’s own parts because they fit perfectly with the Metod system and the installation goes really quickly.

Enjoy your renovation – your kitchen will immediately feel that much better 😉

Hello Usus35, I completely understand why soft-close features are important to you – especially in the kitchen, having drawers and cabinets close quietly is really a pleasure.

A while ago, I was quite unsure because I didn’t know if I could manage it myself. I took it step by step, and it actually worked out, even though I’m not a professional.

Besides that, I can confirm that drawers with soft-close feel completely different, almost like those in high-end fitted furniture.

If you want, feel free to write if you get stuck during the installation – I’m sure there are many here who can encourage you and offer help!

Sometimes sharing small setbacks is worthwhile too, because then others know what to avoid.

I think it’s important to critically consider here whether the soft-close effect achieved by simply replacing the drawers is truly the best solution in terms of durability and functionality compared to retrofitting with dampers.

Some accessory damper systems only show their flaws after a few months of use, or encounter compatibility issues—especially with Ikea systems, which are standardized but still somewhat unique.

In addition, in my opinion, it’s worth carefully weighing whether a complete replacement is justified purely for aesthetic reasons, or if the existing system can be sufficient with targeted improvements.

It would be interesting to gather specific experiences regarding the longevity of original soft-close drawers versus retrofit dampers. Who has long-term experience with this?

Overall, I recommend planning the conversion carefully and not starting without thorough research.

I agree, such a distinction is important. From my experience, the original Ikea soft-close drawer slides are durable and designed for longevity, especially since they are tested at the factory.

Retrofit dampers can be a cost-effective alternative, but often the mechanism is not perfectly matched to the rail system, which can lead to signs of wear or uneven damping. In the long run, this results in less smooth and, at best, noiseless closing.

For DIY enthusiasts who value a neat solution, replacing them with original soft-close slides from the Metod system is definitely recommended. The only downside is the initial investment, which can be higher depending on the number of drawers or cabinets.

In the end, it comes down to how the furniture is used, the priority placed on comfort, and the budget.

Those who want to be sure should take the time to research the exact item numbers at Ikea (e.g. 403.276.13) and order the originals.
