I’m considering buying an Ikea PAX wardrobe for my small bedroom because it can be configured very flexibly. However, I’m wondering how to set up the wardrobe in a space-saving way without making the room feel cramped. Are there any specific tips regarding the ideal width, height, or internal layout to make the best use of the available space? I’m also interested in recommended combinations with sliding doors or shelving units to save space. Has anyone had experience with PAX wardrobes in small rooms and can offer advice on optimal installation?

I totally understand you; small rooms can feel really confined quickly. I made the mistake myself of setting up the PAX too wide, and suddenly the room felt much smaller. What helped me was not building the wardrobe 2 meters (6.6 feet) deep but rather sticking to the standard depth of about 35 cm (14 inches) and instead making use of the height. This way, the floor space stays open, and the room feels airier.

In my opinion, it makes sense to first measure the room and, based on the available floor space, clearly prioritize the dimensions. PAX wardrobes come in three widths (50, 75, 100 cm) and two depths (35 and 58 cm). For small rooms, I generally recommend the 35 cm (14 inches) depth, as this keeps the wardrobe from looking too bulky while maintaining flexibility. In terms of height, it's best to fully utilize the space, ideally up to the ceiling. The internal layout can then be customized with shelves, hanging rods, and drawers to suit your needs.

Take a depth of 35cm (14 inches). Ideally, keep each module only 50cm (20 inches) wide. Build up to the ceiling. Sliding doors save space. Use drawers and shelves inside.

You could almost say PAX is the chameleon of cabinets. 😊 The flexibility of narrow, taller units and sliding doors really makes a big difference. If you cleverly design the interior layout, you can even add small hooks for bags or belts to make use of every centimeter. And hey, who says storage space has to be boring?

Sliding doors are the best choice for small rooms. Regular doors require space to swing open. Additionally, plan modularly and prefer placing several narrow units side by side.
