I’m considering buying an Ikea PAX wardrobe for my small bedroom because it can be configured very flexibly. However, I’m wondering how to set up the wardrobe in a space-saving way without making the room feel cramped. Are there any specific tips regarding the ideal width, height, or internal layout to make the best use of the available space? I’m also interested in recommended combinations with sliding doors or shelving units to save space. Has anyone had experience with PAX wardrobes in small rooms and can offer advice on optimal installation?

Does anyone have comparison experience?

Sure! I combined two Pax units: one with a depth of 58cm (23 inches) for hanging clothes, and another with a depth of 35cm (14 inches) for shelving. This leaves plenty of space and allows for flexible storage. Plus, sliding doors don’t take up any extra room. The interior layout can be changed at any time – a real advantage of the PAX system.

If you have enough space, go with 58 cm (23 inches). Otherwise, 35 cm (14 inches). Building upwards provides sufficient volume without taking up too much floor area.

For better clarity, here is a brief summary from me to refer back to later:
- A depth of 35 cm (14 inches) is recommended for small rooms to maintain walkability.
- A depth of 58 cm (23 inches) is worthwhile for many hanging clothes but requires sufficient aisle width.
- Sliding doors save space in the room compared to hinged doors.
- Maximum height is advisable to minimize floor space usage.
- Use modular interior fittings: a combination of shelves, drawers, clothes lifts, etc.
- Light colors and a matte finish reduce the visual bulk.

If there are any additional points, please share. Particularly interesting is how to position the PAX in the room so that it is as unobtrusive as possible.

Based on experience, there are two strategies: either place the wardrobe against a wall where it doesn’t block the flow of light, for example opposite the window or on the wall next to the door. Alternatively, if the room is very small, you can also use it as a room divider – this adds some multifunctionality, for instance with open shelves on the back for decorations or books. The important thing is to arrange the space so that the wardrobe doesn’t immediately dominate the view.

So far, a very good analysis. I would like to add: Especially in small bedrooms, it makes sense not to place the wardrobe directly next to the window, as it can block natural daylight. If no other wall is suitable, try to keep the wardrobe as compact as possible, ensuring that the clearance around it is not less than 60 cm (24 inches). In smaller rooms, a combination of PAX and traditional shelving units can also help, as they appear less bulky.

I found that very interesting, especially because it allows you to visually divide the space while also creating storage. For a small room, this is often the only option. However, it is important that the back of the cabinet looks appealing; otherwise, it can quickly feel like a wall right in the middle of the room.
