ᐅ How long does the IKEA Hemnes typically last with heavy use?

Hello everyone,

I am considering getting some furniture from the IKEA Hemnes series, specifically cabinets and dressers. Since I plan to use the furniture quite intensively – meaning daily use, sometimes with higher stress from frequent storing and rearranging, and occasionally as a surface for relatively heavy items – I am interested in how long IKEA Hemnes typically lasts under heavy use.

Does anyone have experience with whether the furniture holds up well or if there are noticeable signs of wear after just a few years of daily use? Information on possible repairs or known weak points would also be very helpful.

Thanks in advance!

When you say screws should be tightened regularly, do you mean this generally for Hemnes or more frequently with heavy use?

With heavy use, definitely check them more often, as constant movement can loosen screw joints.

Are there any specific parts in the series that are known to wear out quickly?

Usually the drawer slides and sometimes the hinges, especially if the doors are opened frequently and quickly. However, these components are easy to replace.

How do the drawer slides hold up under constant use, for example?

They generally last several years, depending on the load. If they start to squeak or stick, they can be cleaned or lubricated.

I have had my Hemnes dresser for about 4 years now, with very heavy use, as I use it both as a combined desk surface and storage. Honestly, I find it impressive that despite daily use it is still very sturdy and functional.

Of course, you can see signs of wear – a feeling as if the furniture has lived through stories – but I am satisfied. Maybe this helps you if you also plan to use the furniture intensively.

What I have learned, however, is that some minor repairs at the beginning require patience but are worth it in the end.

Hello everyone,

for those who are interested: I had a Hemnes dresser in a shared apartment room for about 7 years. It was used quite intensively, with the doors mostly left open and constant load from books and boxes.

After 7 years, the wood had slightly swollen in some areas, probably due to micro moisture, and the drawers didn’t slide as smoothly anymore. I didn’t do any repairs but gradually moved the furniture as a replacement into the children’s room.

My conclusion: 6-8 years of heavy use is realistic, provided you do some minor maintenance.

Hemnes furniture is okay, but if you are looking for something that remains sturdy even after heavy use, it can quickly become expensive. Just consider what "heavy" use means for you – daily opening and closing, or also being loaded with heavy weight?

I completely agree. Especially with children or in busy daily use, hinges are often the weak point.

This is an important point: Pine wood requires a consistently dry environment, as otherwise it can swell and warp.

Even with heavy use, Hemnes furniture lasts for five years without major issues. I believe regular maintenance and gentle handling significantly extend its lifespan.
