Hello everyone,

I am considering getting some furniture from the IKEA Hemnes series, specifically cabinets and dressers. Since I plan to use the furniture quite intensively – meaning daily use, sometimes with higher stress from frequent storing and rearranging, and occasionally as a surface for relatively heavy items – I am interested in how long IKEA Hemnes typically lasts under heavy use.

Does anyone have experience with whether the furniture holds up well or if there are noticeable signs of wear after just a few years of daily use? Information on possible repairs or known weak points would also be very helpful.

Thanks in advance!

Hello pasuklo,

I can understand your question well. The Hemnes series is generally solid and made from solid pine, which contributes to good durability. However, with heavy use, there are a few points to keep in mind:

- The construction is rather traditional, using dowels and screws, so joints often suffer from frequent stress.
- Pine wood is prone to dents and scratches, especially under very heavy or constant use.

With intensive use, I would expect a service life of about 5 to 10 years if the furniture is well maintained and loose parts are regularly tightened. If weak spots occur, it is usually the drawer slides or door hinges, which can be replaced quite easily.

Basically, Hemnes furniture is designed for normal household use.

When talking about heavy use, it is important to clarify: Is it mainly about frequent opening and closing, or static load from heavy objects?

The latter mainly affects shelves, which could sag under excessive weight. The quality is good for the price but not comparable to high-quality solid wood furniture specifically designed for heavy-duty use.

One recommendation: Make sure to distribute the load evenly and avoid point loads.

I have been using a Hemnes dresser daily for about 6 years. So far, no major issues. Of course, there are some minor scratches, but nothing bothersome.

The typical wear with Hemnes is that the screw connections loosen over time. Simply retighten them, and the furniture will last longer.

@benon Thanks, that’s very helpful! When you say screws should be regularly tightened, do you mean this in general for Hemnes or more frequently with heavy use? Are there any specific components in the series that tend to loosen more quickly? For example, how do the drawer slides hold up under constant use?
