Lately, I have been reading more frequently about problems with the IKEA Hemnes furniture system and would like to start a detailed discussion here: When do common issues with IKEA HEMNES typically occur, and what are the most effective ways to address them? I am especially interested in gathering experience regarding whether these problems arise during assembly, everyday use, or only after a certain period of use. What specific weaknesses are known (for example, material quality, fit accuracy, durability of fasteners), and what is the best approach when these problems appear? I look forward to well-founded assessments and practical solutions, as I am currently assembling a dresser from this series and want to identify potential issues early on.

Do you have specific tool recommendations for this or do you prefer certain methods?

During the assembly process, a cordless drill driver with torque control is especially recommended to tighten the screws precisely without overdriving them. Additionally, a sturdy Allen key and a small rubber mallet are very useful for aligning the wooden parts.

For later adjustments, screwdrivers—usually Phillips head—are generally sufficient. The included special tool often helps with the hinges.

It is also important to check that the screws grip firmly into the wood core—when working with soft pine wood, adding extra dowels or wooden strips can increase stability.

As an addition: If the assembly is still in progress, it is worthwhile to follow the instructions very carefully and adhere strictly to the sequence. For Hemnes, the screws cannot be tightened arbitrarily; due to the pre-drilled holes and the mechanism, careful handling is necessary to avoid warping.

If doors and drawers start to rub or become loose during use, adjusting the hinges is often the first step. These are usually adjustable in multiple directions – horizontally, vertically, and in depth.

- Tip: Fill screw holes in damaged areas with wood glue and wood shavings to improve stability.
- Depending on the indoor climate, environmental factors such as fluctuations in humidity can also cause warping; maintaining a sufficiently regulated room temperature helps.

Do you already have visible damage to the surface or edges?

Often, it is small oversights during assembly that later cause problems with HEMNES. I recommend checking all individual parts for damage before putting them together. If doors stick, simply adjust the hinges – that usually solves the issue.

I also have HEMNES furniture and can confirm that the common issues usually appear in two stages: first during assembly due to somewhat inaccurate drill holes, and later in everyday use because of loose screws and worn plastic fittings.

Solutions:
- Fine-tune the hinges using the included tool
- Retighten screws after about 6 months and then annually
- Replace plastic parts if necessary (IKEA offers spare parts)
- Swaying doors can be fixed by replacing the door dampers or adding small washers

Important: Pay close attention to precise work during assembly and make small adjustments to the drill holes if needed.

Loose doors or drawers, which often occur after months of use

That’s exactly right. Additionally, with HEMNES, it’s important to pay close attention to the fasteners. The furniture is made almost entirely of solid pine wood, which is sturdy but prone to warping due to its natural characteristics.

My advice: Regularly check and tighten screws and fittings as a preventive measure. For mechanical parts, clean and lubricate the joints.

Re-drill holes with a drill bit of about 5mm (0.2 inches)

This can make assembly significantly easier without compromising stability.

Overall, patience during assembly and maintenance is key to the longevity of the HEMNES system.
